Executive Summary

Write this part of the report last. It should be a one to two paragraph summary of the entire report. The purpose of the executive summary is to let someone in a hurry answer the following questions: What did they do? (Why did they do it?) How did they do it? What were the results?

Table of Contents

1. Introduction 2

2. Design Process 2

3. Design Results 2

4. Conclusions 3

5. Appendix 3

Introduction

Explain the problem and present background information. Also preview the rest of the report for the reader.

Design Process

Describe the process your team followed to produce the recommended design. The target audience is next year's entering freshman students. These students should be able to replicate your results by following your procedure.

"Walk" the reader through your design process. Include important decisions and work delegation. Refer to meeting minutes in this section but place in the appendix. At least one set of meeting minutes should include a "formal" process check (see slide 13 in "Class 8.ppt").

Summarize results in tables and fully explain the tables. Document calculations. Simple calculations can be documented by referring to a typical calculation in the appendix (usually a hand calculation). More complicated calculations can be documented with a well-labeled spreadsheet.

Design Results

Compare your designs in this section. Use tables to summarize information but be careful to "walk" the reader through each table. Check tables to make sure that they are reasonably self-explanatory.

Recommend a particular design and justify your selection. Give this section of the report your most thought. ("It's engineering decision time!")

Table 1. Comparison of Design Alternates.

|Design Alternate | | | | |

| |Functionality |? |? |Cost |

|Design #1 | | | |Lowest |

|Design #2 | | | |Highest |

|Design #3 | | | | |

Conclusions

This section is where designers can "zoom out" and comment on the overall project. This is where you discuss project contingencies. For example,

• "We recommended design #2 based upon the assumption that the column in the center of the room can be removed. If this proves infeasible, we recommend design alternate #3 as the best design."

• "We assumed that the floor and ceiling could be raised x feet. If this is not possible, …"

• "Due to time constraints, we collected no cost information and costs were estimated (conservatively). Accurate cost data may change the relative cost ratings in Table 1, likely making design alternate #2 our recommended design."

• "Measurements of the room were estimated. …"

Appendix

Hand-number the pages of your appendix (A-1, A-2, …). Refer to each page of the appendix in the body of your report. Type a table of contents for the appendix here.

• Classroom Dimensions A-1

• Sketch of Proposed Classroom Layout, Alternate #1 A-2

• Sketch of Proposed Classroom Layout, Alternate #2 A-3
