PROJECT WEB

PROJECT WEBSome new media thinkers—and futurists—believe we are heading toward a “convergence” of cyberspace and the physical environment as new technology rapidly blurs the boundaries between the real and the virtual. . . The question of how real are the electronic places we visit on the Internet is becoming a controversial topic for artists, academics, and legal scholars, who see a number of issues—ranging from the legitimacy of art words to free speech—arising from our increasingly frequent travel into cyberspace (Atwan 346-7).During the course of Project Web, we will discuss how the Web and new media technologies shape and change the way we interact as a society. As a class, we will consider:the different positive and negative effects of new technologies, exploring their larger implications on society as a whole. We will also further explore the effectiveness of multi-media composition, further understanding the usefulness of including images, video and animation to web posts.Project Web asks that you form groups of 3-4 and design a blog/website that will bring attention to a particular issue or topic of your choice. Project Web is your chance to explore a topic of your choice and/or to delve into something unfamiliar, such as engaging with literature. For your project, you will have the choice to:pick an essay (even from the ones I did not assign) from Convergencesthe digital essays on Projects or any website on Projects and adapt its theme/issue by creating an ADVERTISEMENT on group blog/ website to "sell" your stance on that issue to a general audience. The goal of your blog/website is to show how you have understood the different ways that the Web can be used. Also, you will be showing how you understand the idea of design and visual rhetoric, especially in relation to highlighting an issue. Writing Task for essay: Think further about the topic you have chosen for Project Web. What are the issues, sides, and surrounding arguments on the topic? Is there anything about the topic that you want to further explore and analyze? Is there a particular problem related to the topic that you would like to propose a solution for? Is there a cause-and-effect situation related to the topic that you would like to examine and clarify? Your essay should be argumentative and thesis-driven, supported with logical reasons, explanations and evidence. Because there is always more than one side to an issue, your essay should incorporate and discuss possible counterarguments and opposing views.Your essay should reflect rhetorical awareness and address a general, academic audience. The sky is the limit when it comes to this last essay. Find your own focus. Find something you are passionate about and work with it. AVOID***While you have a choice of topics, I suggest that you avoid issues such as abortion, rape and the legalization of marijuana.Requirements:Each student is required to post at least 2 blog posts on group sites reflecting on something related to the class discussion and/or project.
