WINDOWS 7 ? WHAT'S NEW

Step into Windows 7 to explore new ways to customize your Windows environment, search for information and stay in control of your computer. Have fun personalizing the desktop background, adding cool gadgets, and working with new applications such as Snipping Tool and Sticky Notes. Simplify the way you work by pinning items used most frequently to your Start Menu or Taskbar, and accessing files by reducing the number of steps it takes you to find the file using the new Jump Lists feature.

DISPLAYING DESKTOP ICONS (COMPUTER, RECYCLE BIN, CONTROL PANEL NETWORK) The icons you were used to seeing on your desktop are now hidden by default in Windows 7. If you miss seeing the Computer, Network, Recycle Bin, Control Panel, and My Documents (now called User's Files) icons here is a way to display them. To choose which icons you want displayed: Right click the desktop -> Click Personalize - > on the (upper) left side of the window locate and -> Click Change desktop Icons - > Select or Clear the checkboxes you want to see

1. Right click the desktop 2. Click Personalize 3. Click Change desktop (located on the left side of the window pane) 4. Select the checkboxes of the icons you want displayed 5. Click OK

To Hide ALL desktop icons: If you would like to view your desktop background (wallpaper) without being distracted by icons ? you can hide them by following the steps below Right click the desktop - > Click View -> and then ->click Show Desktop Icons

remove checkmark 4. Repeat to make icons reappear

INSTANT SEARCH USING START MENU

Instead of searching through the start menu or any folder, Windows 7 will do the search quickly for you. When you search from the Start menu, Windows searches for files and folders throughout your computer.

To perform and instant search using the Search Box on the Start Menu: Click the Start button -> Click in the Search box -> Type a word or part of a word (Ex: PowerPoint) Note: As you type, programs and files that match the text appear on the start menu

PINNING PROGRAMS TO THE NEW TASKBAR

The new Taskbar has a lot of the features of the Quick Launch Toolbar in Windows XP. You can now pin shortcuts to programs you use frequently such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, or the new Snipping Tool to the taskbar.

Pinning programs provides quick one-click easy access to frequently used programs. You can also rearrange and customize the appearance of the buttons by clicking and dragging the icons along the Taskbar

Note: Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and Windows Media Player are pinned by default

To Pin Items to the Taskbar Click start, -> All Programs, -> Right Click the desired program, ->and then click ->Pin to Taskbar 1. Click the Start Button 2. Click All Programs to locate program or perform an instant search (instructions above) to locate the program 3. Once located, Right Click the Program 4. Click Pin to Taskbar or just drag to taskbar 5. (To UNPIN) ? Right click the program on the taskbar ? Click unpin this program from taskbar

Note: Microsoft Word, Sticky Notes, Microsoft Outlook & the Snipping Tool are now pinned to the Taskbar

JUMP LISTS

Jump Lists are recently accessed files that appear when users right-click on any icon in the taskbar. The Jump Lists are designed to help you find files, websites and programs quickly. You can also pin a favorite file, website or folder to the jump list.

To access a Jump List, ->Right-click a program button on the taskbar.

DO YOU MISS SEEING THE FILE EXTENSIONS AND MENUS?

By default file extensions for known file types are hidden in Windows 7. However, being able to see each file's extension in Windows Explorer is useful (ex. To determine if it's a (.doc or .docx).

USING THE PREVIEW PANE IN WINDOWS EXPLORER

Do you want to see what's IN a file without actually opening it? Windows 7 Preview Pane (Located in Windows Explorer) allows you to do just that. When turned on, The Preview Pane appears on the right side of the window.

To display the preview pane: 1. Click the Windows Explorer Icon 2. Click the Show Preview Pane on the Command Bar 3. Click the file you want to view 4. File contents will be displayed in preview pane

How does it work?

You can view what's in a file, you can play movies and sounds, and you can click through a PowerPoint, without actually opening it.

TEXT TOO SMALL? MAKE THE TEXT ON YOUR SCREEN APPEAR LARGER

Windows 7 has provided a quick and easy way to magnify the icons and fonts on the screen without changing the screen's resolution.

To make the text on your screen larger or smaller

1. Right click the desktop 2. Click Screen Resolution on the shortcut menu 3. Click the Make text and other items larger or smaller link 4. Choose one of the following:

Smaller - 100% (default). Medium - 125%. Larger - 150%. This option appears only if your monitor

supports a larger resolution 5. Click Apply. To see the change, close all of your programs and

then log off of Windows. This change will take effect the next time you log on.

DESKTOP BACKGROUND Tired of the same old background? In addition to using screen savers, you can now cycle through pictures, wallpapers and or themes via the desktop background (wallpaper)

To change background (wallpaper)

1. Right click the desktop 2. Click Personalize on the shortcut

menu 3. Click the Desktop Background link

located at the bottom left hand side of the screen 4. The choose your desktop background window will appear 5. You can choose to select all photos or choose specific categories 6. You can also specify how often your picture changes

You can keep the default picture location (Windows Desktop Backgrounds), or you can click the drop down arrow to select your pictures library and or other options.

ADDING GADGETS

What are Gadgets? Gadgets are mini applications that offer information at a glance. Why use Gadgets? To keep information and tools readily available, just by taking a quick look at your desktop. You can view mini slideshows, instant news headlines, and or keep up to date with the weather.

1. Right click the desktop in an empty area

2. Click Gadgets

3. Drag a gadget to the desktop or click Get more gadgets online

4. Once the gadget has been added:

a. Click the larger size icon to increase the size of the gadget

b. Click the options icon to change the

c. Click the Close icon to remove the gadget from the desktop

Note: To hide the gadgets at any point without having to delete them, right click the desktop in an empty space, click View, the uncheck Show Desktop Gadgets. Repeat this process to display them again.

AERO SHAKE

Ever find your desktop cluttered with open windows? Do you want to quickly focus on one window without minimizing or closing all of the other windows one by one?

Aero Shake allows you to do that by clicking (click and hold) the top of the window pane that you want to focus on and then shaking your mouse back and forth. This allows every other window to minimize instantly...want them back, shake your mouse again to restore the windows.

Tip

Press Windows logo key +Home to minimize all windows except for the currently active window. Press Windows logo key +Home again to restore all windows.

AERO PEEK

Forgot the name of the file that's on your desktop? Want to take a quick peek at your news gadget? Use Aero Peek.... Aero Peek allows you to temporarily view your desktop without minimizing or closing windows.

Just hover over the show desktop button located in the lower right hand corner of the taskbar.
