GenreThe genre I have decided to talk about is Noir the sub-genres are mostly Sci-fi, mystery, adventure and action. Genre Derives from French and is literally translated as “kind “When used in the study of Media & Film. It puts movies in different categories so you know what you’re getting when watching that movie.DefinitionsNoir - The term film noir is French for "black film" or "dark film” first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946 and was unrecognized by most American film industries in that era of filmmakingSci-fi - Science fiction film (or sci-fi) is a genre that uses fictional science-based depictions of phenomena that are not fully accepted by mainstream science such as alien worlds, extrasensory perception and time travel.Mystery - Mystery film is a genre of film that revolves around the solution of a problem or a crime. It focuses on the efforts of the detective private investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the mysterious circumstances of an issue by means of clues investigation and clever deduction.Adventure - Adventure Films are exciting stories with new experiences or exotic locales.Action - Action film is a genre in which the protagonist ends up in a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases.Film Noir CharacteristicsUrban environmentRain-soaked streetsSeedy taverns, diners, and run-down buildingsClaustrophobic interiorsFlickering street lampsNeon signsScenes appear dark, as if lit for night, with many dark shadowsOblique and vertical lines, especially in regard to lightingShadowsFilms done in black and whiteNarration, especially flash-back narrationCriminal underworldHopelessnessCorruptionThe "heroes" tend to be morally ambiguous, alienated from society, andhave a fatalistic outlook.Characters torn by psychological conflictThe femme fataleIt was beginning in the early 1940s that film noir such as The Maltese Falcon (Dir. John Huston, 1941) and Laura, began to appear. Some argue that it is a genre while others think that film noir is more of a tone or mood in the film and some think that film noir is more of a visual style. Film noir is not easily defined. The actual words come from French and mean black cinema. It was in France during the post-war years that the term was used to describe a certain set of Hollywood films that were saturated with darkness and cynicism that was not seen before.2 of my personal favorite Noir films are Bladerunner 2049 and The Third Man. Bladerunner 2049 was released 2017 this year and The Third Man was released in 1949. Bladerunner2049 did have noir elements in there which stood out to me one of them was the fact that in noir films one side of the face is more lit up than the other and at the bottom there is an example of what I mean.-2667008255003476625825500right84582000-34290085344000Another similarity was the fact that some scenes in the movies have only one source of light that lights up most of the protagonist and the surrounding area this creates an uneasy feeling for the audience.-16192549530000And because that technology has become more advanced and we now have CGI we no longer must rely on practical as much as we used to.Steve Neale’s theory of repetition and difference “difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre mere repetition would not attract an audience.” In my opinion this is true, and it shows in these movies when they are compared side by side the noir genre has developed over time for example Both Bladerunner and The Third Man are slow paced they like to take their time with the story and mystery and try to keep the audience guessing.left-63500(1h 48m)-222250-27622500 (2h 44m)Audiences often choose to watch films based on the genre category they are advertised as fitting into. Audiences feel rewarded when the narrative structure flows as they expected it to. This can also be a disadvantage as audiences can get bored of repetition. The audience can be attracted by the previous work of the director.Producers market films in a certain way to appeal to fans of a certain genre. Producers use sequels and franchises in order to be successful. In recent years companies such as Marvel and DC have made movies which are in the same universe and will lead up to the characters meeting up in a future team up movie these sort of movies lead up to more movies and more money for the company. Remakes or adaptations of books/comics already have a target audience which makes it easier for the company because they don’t have to spend that much on marketing because they have fans of the original.Typical iconography in noir movies is that it is usually dark and gloomy and set in abandoned areas such as warehouses, alleyways and empty streets. They use fog sometimes to make the atmosphere mysterious and dangerous. There is regular use of low lighting and heavy jazz music. Bladerunner2049 uses rain and fog to give a gloomy feel.2857501778000The Third Man uses alleyways and empty streets.left40957500The settings of these noir films are usually abandoned buildings and back alleys with little to no lighting and a bit of fog.(Bladerunner 2049)left30670500(The Third Man)The narrative usually in a noir film is that someone is missing and needs to be found or someone has died, and they need to figure out who is the murderer and along the way they make new friends and enemies and possibly get a love interest along the way.In bladerunner2049 the protagonist must find a boy and he finds clues along the way and he travel to different places to get answers and more clues eventually he finds him. In The Third Man the protagonist has to find a third man who he thinks was there at the time of his friends death and along the way he finds clue and goes to various locations also he falls in love with the women he tries to help. The characters typically used in a noir is usually a male detective, private investigator etc. and the men are usually hard-heartened, cynical etc. they usually have a downfall it is usually alcohol or women.Themes such as fate and murder are used throughout film noir. It is very rare to find a noir where there isn’t a murder it gives the chance to bring the detective who is usually the protagonist on his journey to solve this murder or find a missing witness. Fate looks at how the hero and the damsel are brought together and even through the toughest situations and overcoming certain obstacles there is still a final romance. A good noir crime mystery film with good writing and actors will keep the audience guessing as to who it is and will either give them a huge shock or will give them a bit of joy as their prediction was right. ................
