36TH ANNUAL SOCK DINNER SLATED FOR OCTOBER 17

Detroit, MI (September 18, 2008) --The 36th annual SOCK (Support Our Capuchin Kitchen) dinner will take place October 17, 6:30-9:30 PM, at Ford Field. The evening includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner and entertainment.

Alan Mulally, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company, has been named this year’s SOCK chairperson. The event typically draws over 1,200 people from throughout the metro area.

“SOCK is our largest fundraising event,” Capuchin friar and soup kitchen executive director Brother Jerry Smith said. “The proceeds from SOCK allow us to keep helping those in need. The Capuchin Soup Kitchen is a large operation that depends on the generosity of others in order to continue reaching out to those in need.”

New to the event this year is the SOCK “After Glow” which will take place after the dinner.

The “After Glow” portion of the evening will begin at 9 PM, Ford Field’s South Cove Lounge. The $50 per person ticket includes entertainment, two drinks, unlimited dessert bar and coffee station. "That 80’s Band -Detroit's Premier Flashback Experience" will be providing the entertainment. The After Glow event is included for those who will be attending the traditional SOCK event.

Last year’s SOCK dinner raised over $370,000. Tickets for this year’s event are available at $250 per person and can be purchased by calling 313.579.2100, ext. 153. A silent auction with more than 200 items will be featured.

Founded in 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves Metro Detroit by providing food, clothing, and spiritual counsel to those in need. Frequently preparing and serving 2,000 meals a day, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen also distributes household items and operates a shower program, food pantry, and children’s tutoring and art therapy program. Additionally, its Earthworks Urban Farm, produces over 6,000 pounds of vegetables for Detroit’s hungry and educates the community in regards to sustainable relationships between human beings and the earth.

The soup kitchen is a ministry of the Province of St. Joseph of the Capuchin Order, which is headquartered in Detroit and serves Capuchin ministries worldwide.
