2. Insert the WinXP disk, close and start-up screens that might arise.

4. Disconnect the RJ-45 plug from the back of the computer.
5. Turn removable hard-drive key, remove drive, insert “your” drive, turn key, turn on power.
6. Choose to boot from CD, choose to set up Windows XP (agree to conditions).
7. Follow the on-screen directions to delete any partitions.

20. Put in the Dell Optiplex Resource CD. Go through the starting dialog boxes.
21. Use the dropdown list to select the system model or nearest system model.
22. Click on the checked drivers, click on the Extract button and follow the dialog boxes to install the drivers. You don’t have to restart after each one, but eventually you must restart.
23. After the restart, return to the device driver.
24. If there are remaining yellow question marks, then return to the CD, and chose All in the Models dropdown list (this will widen the search). Follow the instructions for installing the needed driver.
25. Insert the McAfee CD. Find the McAfee Setup program and run it.
26. Choose “Perpetual” as the license expiry type, accept the license and choose a “Typical” install. (Do not choose update since we are not on the Internet yet.)
27. Plug in the RJ45 connector.

28. Go to the Control Panel. Choose Network Connections. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon, choose Properties.
29. Choose TCP/IP from list. Click on Properties. Choose the radio button that says Use the following IP Address. Enter the network settings taken down at start of lab.
30. Go to Start/Help and Support/…Windows Update. Follow the screens to download the software for installing Microsoft Updates (typically comes in 3 parts).
31. Restart. Open Internet Explorer, go to . Click Express button, download and install updates. (When I performed this step, there were 27 updates. )
32. [1]Restart. Go to Start/All Programs/Network Associates/Virus Scan Console.
33. Select Auto Update, go to Task/Start Task on the menu.
34. After McAfee updates have downloaded, perform an On-Demand scan.

35. Shut down. Replace the original drive. Make sure the system comes up to the EXPLORER domain logon.
