Description
Provides comprehensive diagnostic services for children with possible autism spectrum disorders using a multidisciplinary approach. Faculty include developmental pediatrics, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, neurology and social work. The program provides care for young children to teens as part of a life-span program in conjunction with faculty at UW Medical Center. The developmental pediatricians tend to see younger aged children with older youngsters often followed by the teams of psychology, psychiatry and neurology. The activities at the center include diagnostic services, chronic disorder management, crisis intervention and medication management.
Resident Role and Expectations
Residents will observe a standard assessment of a child suspected of having autism. They may, schedule depending, be able to view the administration of an Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), considered a gold standard instrument for autism assessment. There may be opportunities to observe children followed for long-term autism management.

Educational Goals
1. Resident will see between 1-4 young children who have symptoms suggestive of autism or who have been diagnosed and are being followed long term
2. Resident will observe the administration of an ADOS test.
3. Resident will observe the function of a multi-disciplinary diagnostic team
Learning Objectives
Because of participating in the Autism Diagnostic Clinic, trainees will be able to:
a. Medical Knowledge
• define the medical assessment for a child with suspected autism.
b. Patient Care
• define the warning signs for possible autism.
• understand the use of screening instruments used in primary pediatrics to detect early signs of autism
c. Systems Based Practice
• understand the resources existing in a community for assessment and intervention for a child with suspected autism.
