IIntroduction
TM
The StraightTalk.'digitalvoice delivery system is a compact unit that digitally records dictation on a hard disk drive. Two authors and one transcriptionist can access the unit simultaneously. In addition, a transcriptionist can access and transcribe letters that are actively being dictated.
Since the system uses a hard disk drive, there is no delay between the dictate and transcribe process, and there is no loss of dictation during a power failure. The transcriptionistdoes not have to wait for dictation to finish, or for a cassetteto fill, before beginning transcription. All dictation is instantly accessible. Most important, letters can also be accessed randomly without the delays caused by tape repositioning.
Users can access the module through either a direct-connectterminal (proprietaryin-house wiring) or through a tone telephone (telephone system). Both types of connectionsare available for each of the module's three ports (two dictate and one transcribe). The telephone company lines plug directly into the module, no special interface is needed.
TM
You can link several Straight Talk modules in series (4ma.). You can also link them with Model 3920MVP@microcassettedictation/transcription systems. A four-modulesystem can
handle up to 8 authors and 4 transcribers simulta-
neously.
TM
When you use the Straight Talk system with a Model 3920 system, you can rerecord your dictation to cassettes. You can rerecord either one or all jobs. If you use an eight-channelintercom terminal with your system, then dictators can use a dictate station or a tone telephone to call the system supervisor.
Each module has two digital displays and a series of status indicators. It is through the displays that you actually track and assign dictated letters for transcription. You use the author's initials and ID number to identifying dictation. (Each module can identify 99 dictators.) A special Guest ID is also available for non registered users. Individual letters are distinguishedby work type (10 work types), length and completion date/time.
There are six different configurations for the StraightTalkTMsystem. These configurations provide three basic alternatives: serial recording, redundant recording and variable recording times. A system with a single hard disk drive, or redundant drives, can record 125letters. Non redundant, two-drive systems can record 250 letters. The redundant configuration protects your dictation in the event of a failure. It uses a second disk drive to back up all recordings.
The following is a list of the possible module configuations:
Model 7120/7124hard disk 80 min. serial 160 min. serial
80 min. redundant
Model 714017144 hard disk: 160 min. serial 320 min. serial
160 min. redundant
The module accepts dictation from standard dictate terminals,CONNEXIONSQ telephones or DICTELQ remote dictate terminals. For transcription, the module uses standard transcribe terminals, TELSCRIBEQ remote transcribe terminals or CONNEXIONSB telephones.

Conventions
This manual uses a number of conventions that you should be aware of. Each operating procedure can have any combination of the following three elements: a summary, a step-by-step procedure and/or a listing of related facts (More Information). The summary simply lists all of the keys, buttons and commands you must use to execute a function. All of the summariesare enclosed in a box. A step-by-stepprocedure, provided for every operation, gives a detailed explanation of a function. Finally, the listing of related facts, "More Information," lists additional information that you may need to know.
Tones mentioned in the text are generally followed by a number and letter in parenthesis. A tone chart (see the appendix) identifies all of the tones generated by the module.
Also, the operating instructions use bold highlighting to emphasize any key, button, or switch you must use when performing a function. In addition, brackets are used to indicate buttons
(e.g., press [*I, and enter the work type, etc.).
The following is a list of some of the standard terminology used throughout the text:
Module - the Straight TalkTMdictation/transcription module
Supervisor - person in charge of operating the
module Direct Connect - in-house equipment that is
wired directly to the module during installation Remote terminal - direct connect terminal
Telephone Connect - equipment that connects
via telephone company or telephone system wiring
Signed o f - dictation that is completely tran-
scribed.
Letter - name given to all forms of dictation
(i.e., note, memo, job, brief, etc.).
