The following information provides guidance on expectations of all W. P. Carey employees. Conflict of InterestThe W. P. Carey School of Business holds all of its employees to the highest standard of integrity, ethical behavior and conduct. It is expected that common sense and reasonable thought will be used in day-to-day decision making as well as to react responsibly in difficult and/or unusual circumstances. When making work-related decisions, it’s advised to ask yourself the question “Should I?” as opposed to “Could I?” when determining the appropriateness of the action to be taken. The school is passionate about demonstrating transparency and accountability. These are critical as well as admirable characteristics of W. P. Carey employees. When making decisions, ask yourself first if it would pass the ‘Front Page Test.’ Check with your supervisor, the Dean’s Office, or the Office of General Counsel. Examples of conflicts of interest:You have a second job with a company that does business with ASUYou own a business and it would be convenient for your department or your students to buy goods or services from your businessYour children have certain talents and they can help you with a project that’s important to youYou want to buy goods or services from a business owned by a relativeSignificant financial interests that could reasonably appear to influence the design, conduct, or reporting of research or research resultsInterests of the researcher, and of the researcher’s spouse and dependent childrenThe Office of General Counsel provides additional information at for ongoing guidance. Code of ConductSpeak kindly to students and employees by demonstrating human dignity, respect, and encouragement of open communication. These are all expected professional behaviors. The W. P. Carey School has no tolerance for inappropriate behavior and will address any report of misbehavior considered as bullying such as tantrums, screaming, intimidation, threats, and repetitive behaviors that undermine colleagues, in addition to any harassment and/or discriminatory actions considered reprehensible or violent in the workplace. Business Dress AcumenAs a W. P. Carey employee, your appearance projects an image to the students, the faculty, your coworkers, and the public overall. Each employee is expected to practice good grooming habits and dress in a manner that is appropriate to the position and the assigned work activities. A supervisor can provide guidance to what is considered appropriate, as this can vary by position.Work Schedules and HoursAll departments within the school are to be sufficiently staffed and open to the public between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, including days surrounding holidays. Some departments will require weekend or evening work. Any adjustment to a regular workday requires prior approval of a supervisor. Some options available may include a work schedule that will enable you to commute by public transportation, carpool, vanpool, bicycle or walking, or the consideration of a flexible work schedule. Non-Exempt vs. ExemptThe major difference between a non-exempt employee and an exempt employee is in time reporting. Non-exempt employees are required to track the hours worked on a daily basis. Any work performed by a non-exempt over 40 hours in one work week is considered comp time and recorded at time and a half. Talk to your supervisor about work hours, accruing comp hours, and using accrued hours.Exempt employees complete the necessary work required to fulfill the expectations of the job. All work schedules and any changes to assigned work schedules are to be discussed and approved by the supervisor. Comp time is not accrued but work schedules may be adjusted. Conflict of Commitment — Secondary EmploymentThe W. P. Carey School works hard to maintain a recognized academic reputation that reinforces a commitment to the level of our students’ education. While engaging in secondary employment outside of your primary position is permitted, it is expected that the school’s reputation will not be altered, nor will your primary position. All secondary employment is to be disclosed for transparency purposes. Outside employment or rendered professional services are acceptable when:It does not in any way interfere with your primary job responsibilities It does not cause a negative reflection to the school’s reputationIt is not with a competitor or appears to reflect a conflict in the employee’s commitment to the schoolIt does not jeopardize the advancement of the schoolIf you are unsure about a potential conflict, ask your supervisor for guidance to determine what would be considered appropriate. Employee Wellness and Work/Life BalanceThe W. P. Carey School understands and supports a balance between work and life responsibilities. In addition to various adjustments that can be made in your work environment, ASU assists employees in establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles with services found through the Office of Human Resources – Employee Services. Emails, Social Networking, Computer Use, and SecurityEmails are considered public record when substantially connected to school activities. Records marked "draft" or "confidential" are not exempt from this consideration. The connection each employee has to the school’s activities is represented through his or her job with varying contributions and involvement.All activities performed by an employee, including engaging in social network sites, require the employee to create individual safeguards to ensure there is a balance between professional and personal information that considers the school’s reputation and your level of service. Employees are expected to use discretion and consider the given audiences when producing any written communication. All information digitally stored on school/state-purchased computer equipment is considered public record unless protected by statute (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA.) Your computer is not to be used for self-serving activities that may jeopardize the school’s reputation. To ensure your computer is secure at all times: Use the Ctrl/Alt/Delete function before leaving your computer for any length of time Log off your computer every nightKeep your password private and change it every 180 days Media InquiriesThe deans of the W. P. Carey School are the official spokespersons for the school. They are charged with the responsibility of providing information and opinions, or referring a media request to the appropriate expert to officially respond.With the exception of straightforward informative questions, inquiries from all media representatives are to be referred to the Department of Marketing and Communications or to the dean’s office. This includes public record inquiries, as well. More information can be found through the Office of General Counsel.Obligations of a Public Employee working for ASUWhile employed with the W. P.
