Youth Transition Toolkit | A Guide for Young People in ...

Activity I: “Work it Out”

Objective: Youth will understand the difference between a “job” and a “career”.

Suggested time frame: 25 minutes

Format: Large group and small group

Materials needed:

• “Work it out” PowerPoint presentation

• “Work it out presentation – slide talking points” Word document

• Computer and projector (if you don’t have this available, you can hand out copies of the PowerPoint)

• Accessible writing materials (whiteboard, flipchart, etc.) to dictate responses.

Vocabulary/terms:

• Job vs. Career: See PowerPoint

Suggested Facilitator Preparatory activities:

• Familiarize yourself with definitions of “job” and “career” and, if applicable, utilize more appropriate examples for the population you are working with.

• Review the “Employment” chapter on the Youth Transition Toolkit website (employment.html or download from ).

• Review the presenter talking points for the Employment PowerPoint (included in the “Notes” section underneath each slide and as a separate Word document).

Creating Context:

Language to create the context is included in the “work it out” PowerPoint presentation.

Procedure:

1. Conduct presentation on the “Employment” PowerPoint (talking points are also included as a separate document which can be printed and utilized by the facilitator to provide additional information for each slide).

2. Slides 11 and 12 pose questions to the participants regarding what they would like to do for a career, and why working is important to them. Ask participants to break into small groups (3-4 participants each) and brainstorm answers to these questions.

Closure: Bring everyone back together in a large group to review the small group discussions and share with all participants. Encourage them to ask questions and talk about why they chose what they chose! Go over slide 13 (the last slide) to talk about additional reasons people might have for going to work. Do they agree with these reasons? Also encourage participants to check out the career planning resources found in the Employment chapter of the Youth Transition Toolkit.
