Primary Succession

Succession that develops in a community of plants and animals in an area where no living things existed before

For example, a volcano creates a large open area of rock. Lichens grow on that rock. Over time, other plants replace the lichens.

Secondary Succession

Succession that develops in a community in an area after it has been disturbed.

Nature disturbs communities through forest fires or strong winds. Humans also disturb communities when the cut down forests.

In secondary succession, soil already exists. Over time, larger and larger plants grow in the soil.
