Japanese-American Cultural Diffusion Presentation

Japanese-American Cultural Diffusion Presentation

I. Process and Overview- Intro from Matt

II. History (of our project and of JACD)- Explain our first areas of interest (why we choose to do history and that we choose topics that each person was interested in). Also, why we trashed the history/politics, economics, media, etc. idea.

III. Time period we chose (1932-1999) and why we didn’t start with Commodore Perry

IV. How is our site organized? We chose case studies instead of themes. Click on mission statement so they can see our basic idea. Introduce our thesis: “Every cultural aspect that is diffused/exchanged between Japan and America is affected by both sides due to the underlying cultural differences between the two nations.”

V. Methodology- We chose 5 different topics to begin our research. Then we chose specific examples to immerse ourselves into the cultures and get a view from both sides. We took a wide variety so we are not too focused and we leave room for open holes. In each example we touch on elements of our five major themes.

VI. Why is our site different? Discuss our level of analysis, our focus, why our focus is different from other sites. Is it something people will go back to often or use once?

VII. Specific areas of study, why we chose them, and how they lend towards the thesis

• Anime

• Baseball

• Food

• Godzilla

• Kawaii

• The Pill

• Video Games

VIII. “Struggles and insights, failings and triumphs, and what you--and we—can learn from them.” Lets discuss our process of collaboration ie) Unifying interest in cultural diffusion, yet different topics of interest. Helpful that we have literary specialists and technological specialists. Discuss our difficulty in forming a thesis because we all are picky about the specific words we choose. We started with one thesis—trashed it—and came back to it in the end (because that is what we focused our research on).
