11- The Difference Between the Gospels- SG

[Pages:2]THE BIBLE WAY TO HEAVEN

Realize That God Loves You. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16).

The Bible Says That All Men Are Sinners. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory to God." (Romans 3:23).

God's Word Also Says That Sin Must Be Paid For. "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

The Good News Is That Christ Paid for Our Sins. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8).

We Must Personally Pray and Receive Christ by Faith as Our Personal Saviour. The Bible Says, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:13).

The Difference

11 Between the Gospels

Memory Verse- John 20:31

"But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."

In the beginning of the New Testament in the Bible, we find the four books of Matthew, Mark,

Luke, and John. These books are often referred to as

the gospels. What do we mean when we use this

term "gospels"? You may notice in your Bible at the

beginning of each of these books a reference like,

"The Gospel According to Mathew" or "Matthew's

Gospel". The Bible is not giving us

four different gospels, but four

Spirit, writing through four different

people about the same person.

The Bible is God's revelation of Himself to

all mankind. The Bible has forty different authors

that wrote sixty-six books over a period of 1,500

years. These people came from many different

places and backgrounds yet they all write about the

same subject. Each reveals a different aspect and

characteristic of God and Jesus Christ. As we come

to these four books in the New Testament, how do

we explain the differences in these books?

The Pictures of the Gospel Records

Each of the books paints a picture of Jesus

Christ but each have different interests. Read Ezekiel

1:4-10. Notice Ezekiel's reference to the four creatures

each with four faces. We see a man, a lion, an ox, and

an eagle. Their wings are joined together. These faces

represent a separate aspect of these four books of the

New Testament yet are joined just like the wings to

make one portrait.

The book of Matthew represents the lion. Read

Matthew 1:1. Here Jesus Christ is presented as the

Promised King of the Jews. He is called the Son of

Abraham and connected with a kingdom. This book

has a genealogy that traces the kingly lineage from

Abraham through David.

Think about it:

Mark represents the ox. Jesus is

presented as the suffering servant. Read

servant does not need one. Luke represents Christ as the Son of man. Read Luke 19:10. Here Luke emphasizes the humanity of Christ. There is a genealogy

that traces Christ all the way back to the first man,

Adam. Luke emphasizes that God came down to earth

as a man who walked, lived, and obeyed just like a

man. John represents the eagle. Read John 20:31. He

presents Jesus as God. There is no genealogy because

God has none.

There can be different views of the same

situation. There could be a car accident with four

witnesses. Each would have seen the wreck based on

their view. Each would give a slightly differing

account of the same wreck based on their particular

view. This does not make either one of the views false.

They are different aspects of the same account.

The Groupings of the Gospel Records

As we view these Gospel records, we notice that Matthew, Mark, and Luke are linked together. These books cover much of the same miracles, parables, and teaching. The Gospel according to John stands alone. It covers unique material that the others do not. John has 92% unique material covered while Mathew has 42%, Mark only 7%, and Luke 59%.

John covers the private ministry and discourses, His divine aspects, and His Judean ministry while the other three cover the public ministry and discourses, His human aspects, and His Galilean ministry. The order of the writings are Matthew at 50 A.D., Luke 60 A.D., Mark 68 A.D., and John 85 A.D.

The Authors & Audience of the Gospel Records

Your Thoughts

Matthew was a Jewish tax collector turned

Apostle of Jesus Christ. He wrote specifically to the

Jews. His keywords are kingdom, king, fulfilled, and

righteous. Mark is the John Mark of Acts. He is found

in scripture hanging around the giants of the faith. He

writes to the Romans who is the working man. The

keywords Mark uses are and, straightway, and

immediately. Luke is the only Gentile writer. He is a

physician who was a close associate to

Think About it:

Paul. He writes to the Greeks. The

keyword found in Luke's gospel record is the Son of man. John is a Jewish Apostle who was part of the inner circle of Christ. John wrote to the world. His

key words are believe, word, and glorify.

Each gospel record is written independent of

each other, by different people, at different times, in

different places, and each for a different purpose yet

these records perfectly harmonize together to paint the

perfect picture of Jesus Christ.
