Innovative Teaching Strategies in Nursing and Related Health Professions:

Comparing and contrasting different methods of learning health assessment skills

Instructions:  In this assignment, you will be asked to think about all the ways that students learn how to collect and analyze subjective and objective data--one of the most important skills we learn as nurses.  There are several instructional strategies you can use to help students learn and practice. Your selection should weigh the benefits of each method.

You will be completing the Cardiovascular Concept Lab, as well as the Focused Exam: Chest Pain with Brian Foster, a virtual patient who is a part of the Shadow Health’s Digital Clinical Experience.  Prior to completing these assignments, you will need to:

Explore and Understand Shadow Health’s Digital Clinical Experience (DCE)

1. Watch the Shadow Health Introduction video (8 min)

2. Complete the Shadow Health Orientation assignment (15 min)

3. Complete the Abdominal Concept Lab (45 minutes)

4. Complete the Focused Exam: Abdominal Pain with Esther Park (60 min)

In the table on the template provided, list 3 additional characteristics and then indicate which method(s) the characteristic applies to.  Then, write a brief paragraph describing each of the characteristics.  There are two different examples on the template for you to review.

Objectives:

1. Compare and Contrast the benefits and drawbacks of each of the different modalities of student learning.

2. Analyze the benefits and drawbacks and discuss each.

Example Response Below:

Development of skills in a safe, low-risk environment:  Cultivating confidence in assessment skills is paramount to ensuring that graduates from your nursing program are successful.  Developing those skills in a safe, low-risk environment is an ideal, low stress way to provide students with that opportunity.  Standardized patients who are given a scenario to act out, high fidelity mannequins who are programmed by a lab instructor, practicing in a lab setting on healthy peers, and a virtual patient with simulated problems all provide students with a safe learning environment to enhance their skill sets and build confidence.

Accessibility 24/7, from any location: This is only true of a simulated patient.  The benefit of this is that today’s students are extremely busy.  Adult learners and those who are enrolled in RN to BSN courses often have work commitments, family obligations, and a myriad of other things to juggle.  It is imperative that they are given the opportunity to practice their skills on their own time.
