Anthem and Fahrenheit 451 are similar in many ways. They both are set in very different futures in which, certain freedoms are taken away. Although Anthem is more of an extreme or radical approach. There are also some different types of themes.

Both books show a society completely controlled by some type of government. Anthem is different because its society was after almost everything was destroyed including all technology. Most of the people’s knowledge was also lost or destroyed. It was hard to regain the knowledge they lost because they aren’t allowed to think for themselves. Everything must be for the good of the people and, no one can be more superior to others. In these ways, Fahrenheit 451 was not as extreme as Anthem.

In Fahrenheit 451 not as much knowledge was lost compared to Anthem. There is still a lot of technology like TVs, radios, and cars. In Anthem the society doesn’t know what electricity is and only uses candles. Fahrenheit 451 is a very dumbed down society where they lose most of their common sense. Socializing is kept to a bare minimum and even sidewalks are banned. Although they differ in some ways, they are even more similar.

They both have societies that are completely monitored and stripped of many freedoms. In both the books, the characters lack a sense of personality. The characters rebel and start to gain a sense of their own personality. Also one of the most important similarities is that books are banned and most of them have been destroyed.

Books provide essential knowledge to society that helps it advance. They give different ideas and can inspire many people. When people or government try to censor books too much, it can eventually lead to books being banned, or a more controlled society. When you take books away you lose not just the books but the knowledge they teach.
