1.03 Research Methods

In the Try It exercise you completed an experiment and a survey using the hypothesis that “Sugar affects the attention of young children.” Now, you will use the information from that activity to write a response in paragraph form comparing and contrasting the experimental method to the survey method and explaining which method you think is better and why.

Complete the graphic organizers by defining or explaining the terms given. Then use the graphic organizer to complete the writing assignment, which will include answers to the questions below.

|Experimental Method |

|Describe your control group? | |

|Describe your experimental group? | |

|What is the independent variable? | |

|What is the dependent variable? | |

|How you will measure the results? | |

|Define mean, median and mode: | |

| | |

|Calculate the mean, median and mode using these test scores: | |

|2,3,3,4,4,5,5,5,5,8 | |

|Survey Method |

|Who will you survey? | |

|What types of questions will you use? | |

|How you will measure the results? | |

|Note: You do not have to determine the mean, median and mode. | |

|Just compare the survey method to the experimental method. | |

Answer these questions using paragraph form in your compare and contrast writing assignment. Be sure to use complete sentences in your paragraph(s) as you use the terms and information from the graphic organizer above.

1. How do the experimental and survey methods differ in their use of groups?

2. How do the experimental and survey methods differ in the way that they gather information? In other words, how do they test their hypothesis?

3. How do the experimental and survey methods measure their results?

Remember: For the experimental method you must calculate the mean, median and mode from the scores given. Then compare the method of measuring results in the experimental and survey methods.

4. Which method do you think is better and why?

5. Use grammar/spell check

Example beginning:

In the experimental and survey methods of research the hypothesis is the same; “Sugar affects the attention of young children.” The way that they conduct their research is different.
