Welcome!

In this class we will be learning the basics of life science (biology). Life is extremely

dynamic, diverse, and special. You will not only discover that life exists everywhere on earth but how it has evolved and how humans have manipulated it! This class is intended to expose you to the science of the world.

I believe that the information you learn in this course will not only be fun but also useful throughout your life, whether you go to college, enter the workforce, or enlist in the military upon graduation from high school. It is impossible to exist in a world where you will not interact with issues dealt with in science.

Textbook: Life Science, Glencoe

Expected materials for 7th Grade Science:

- 3 ring binder (This may be used with other classes)

- 5 Pens and Pencils

- A folder to keep notes and handouts in

- Your brain (yes I will be checking for this)

*Optional

- Disinfectant Wipes

- Colored pencils

- Highlighters

Tardiness and Absences:

We have a lot to cover in this class so every day counts! Make sure you come to

class prepared, ready to work, and on time. It is your responsibility to make up

all the work you miss when you are not in class. Find out what you missed from

classmates, from me, use the team website or sign up for our team remind101 homework texts as a resource Being out is not an automatic excuse for handing assignments in late.

Behavior:

You are all old enough to know how to behave. This room, like any science classroom

may contain substances and equipment that are potentially hazardous and/or expensive

to replace. Because of this, I have absolutely no tolerance for horseplay. You should be in your seats and ready to work when the bell rings. Raise your hand to be acknowledged and no one will be excused for the bathroom unless it’s an emergency.

Classroom Expectations:

Student Expectations:

• Follow directions!!!

• To bring a pen or pencil and your notebook to class every day.

• Respect and treat every person in class.

(No swearing, teasing or physical contact)

• Keep your lab area clean!

• Complete the two ~ three homework assignments a week in a neat and organized manner.

(Usually no homework over the weekends)

Teacher expectations:

• Treat you with the respect you deserve.

• Help you understand science concepts, lab experiments and life!

• Correct assignments, tests and return them to you in a timely matter.

• Be available for extra help.

(extra help times to be announced)

• Promise to earn a smile from you

Grading Policy:

There are 4 quarters for the year and one final assessment. Each is worth 20% of overall average.

Quarter 1 20% + Quarter 2 20% + Quarter 3 20% + Quarter 4 20% + Final Assessment 20%= 100%

Your grade in science each quarter is out of 100%.

Tests worth: = 40%

Quizzes worth: = 20%

Labs/activities = 25%

Homework = 15%

Notebook check = 1 Quiz

* Projects: =

There will be 3 projects assigned throughout the year. Each will count for a percentage on the final assessment but not for the quarter they are assigned in.

• Late work will be accepted up to the end of the quarter it was assigned for half credit.

• During the 3rd marking period, the district holds a science fair. All students are encouraged to participate; extra credit is awarded to those that participate.

Wappinger Junior High School: 7R Science September 8, 2015

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Welcome to 7th grade science and Team GREEN! Throughout the year our team will consistently push each student to achieve their greatest goals both academically and personally. All Team Green teachers make connections between math, science, social studies and ELA in the classroom. This is important because in the real world, no one thinks in terms of one subject only.

I want to formally introduce myself as I am still relatively new within the district. My name is Glen Calvin and this is my sixth year teaching in WJHS and seventh year overall in the Wappinger Central School District. I have taught science at all four secondary schools in both junior high and senior high schools and am very familiar with the challenges at both levels. Together we can help every student exceed their potential and prepare them for a world that is constantly changing.

If for any reason a student fails to uphold any of the requirements stated above, we will try to work out a solution so your student can advance academically. If the problem persists, you will be notified and a conference will be requested.

Our objectives this year in science will include:

1. Expanding and developing the skills of using and manipulating laboratory equipment.

2. Improving skills of investigation, observation, and analyzing conclusions.

3. Developing an understanding and appreciation of the processes of science.

4. Recognizing that today’s “facts” may be modified or discarded tomorrow due to experimentation.

5. Identifying an appreciation of today’s technology and connecting it to the life sciences.

To the students:

You made it to the world of lockers, many different teachers, more independence and more responsibility! For some, middle school is a way of starting over and for others it’s a way of using the skills you learned in elementary school to conquer even bigger challenges. I believe every one of you will not only be successful in the future but will also be an extraordinary citizen of the world.

Good luck this year!

Sincerely,

Glen Calvin
