MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Get updates online!

Dear Families, Staff, & Community Partners:

It's hard to believe the summer is nearly over and that the colder months will soon be upon us. I hope that you have managed to get away from the heat and everyday pressures to de-stress and find relaxing pleasures over these past several months. For some ITP families the extreme temperatures brought considerable hardship due to the heat, thunderstorms and electric outages. Staff and community partners worked diligently to assist many families throughout the summer. My deepest thanks and appreciation goes out to all staff and partners who assisted Montgomery County families so that they not only survived the summer but enjoyed some measure of happiness in daily family and community life.

It's that time of year again... Time for the MSDE Family Survey! The Maryland State Department of Education's (MSDE) family survey is the state's primary way of measuring how well Infants and Toddlers' Programs (ITPs) are serving children and families. The survey results directly impact the state's decisions regarding improving services to Infants and Toddlers' children and families.

launch of several community partnerships and the expansion of existing partnerships throughout the county over the next year. We plan to expand community based learning opportunities for children to build social and early academic skills to ensure all ITP children are ready for kindergarten and ready to learn. We will be rolling out these programs on a staggered schedule. Please check with your service coordinator, the family web site and the MCITP newsletter for updates. We will also be doing direct mailings to ensure that families are made aware of opportunities as they arise.

Your participation in the Family Survey is very important!

This year, MCITP staff will hand-deliver the MSDE family surveys to participating families. Staff will present the survey to families during regularly scheduled visits and encourage caregivers to complete the surveys during that day's visit. MCITP Families, please make time to complete the survey when your service coordinator brings it to you. Your feedback is so important and will help us serve your family and all MCITP families better! Expect to receive your survey around mid to late September.

I hope to see you and your families enjoying our local recreation centers, the Parent Resource Centers, and our local libraries this Fall. Best always,

Ronnie Biemans MCITP Director

Do you need child care?

LOCATE can help!

The Maryland Committee for Children (MCC) believes that all children are entitled to quality child care and it is the parent's right to make an informed decision concerning their child care needs. To this end, MCC offers the LOCATE: Child Care Special Needs Service. This service is free--it is funded by the MD State Dept. of Education. It is available to any family who has a child with special needs. LOCATE services are available for children aged birth through 21.

A Parents Sur vival Guide!

There are already many articles, web sites and great booklets that are being published and distributed for families of children with Autism, but the great advantage of THIS resource to our families is that it has been developed specifically for MCITP children already diagnosed with autism or on the spectrum. Please take a look at this great resource developed by a MCITP Down County Site Parent Educator. Download the Guide in the Resources section of the Family Support Network Website:

Did you know...MCITP staff are able to

provide services to children in childcare settings as well as in the child's home and other natural environments?

If your child is in a center or home-based child care setting and you would like to have MCITP services provided in the child care program, let your service coordinator know about your interest. She/he can tell you what options are available for your child and help you begin the conversation with your child care provider.

SEEC's Parent-to-Parent Program provides Information and Comfort!

SEEC's new Parent to Parent (P2P) program provides emotional support and practical advice to families of children with special needs by matching parents of newly diagnosed children, or those in a formative transition period, with a parent who has experienced a similar situation. "Our goal is to help families feel less isolated, get the information they need, and become more hopeful about their child's future," says Wendy Baumert, the program's coordinator. Launched in January 2009, P2P is now fully operational and parent/mentor matches are underway. A mentor training manual focusing on effective communication skills and empathetic listening has been created and used at several training sessions. The manual also includes information on local and statewide resources families may want to access, and is being translated into Spanish to provide wider access to families in need. P2P's long term goals include forming an advisory committee to oversee the program, expanding training opportunities for mentors, and organizing social outings for program participants. If you are interested in participating, please contact Wendy at: wbaumert@, or visit .
