The Evergreen State CollegePosition DescriptionDate:March 2020Position:Associate Director of First Peoples Multicultural, Trans, and Queer Support ServicesOrganization:First Peoples Multicultural, Trans, and Queer Support Services Reports to:Director of First Peoples Multicultural Trans and Queer Support Services and Climate and Belonging EducationSpecial NoteThis is a full-time, overtime-exempt, project position funded for one year on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College, with extension dependent on additional funding.?Position PurposeWorking in consultation with the Director, this position provides leadership in the development, implementation, and management of a culturally relevant student success and retention program to support the professional and personal development of the trans, queer, and multi-cultural student populations of The Evergreen State College.?The position provides office leadership for programs and services that support?students who identify as underrepresented, first-generation, low-income, students of color, LGBTQQIAAP, and undocumented/DACAmented students.Nature and ScopeFirst Peoples Multicultural, Trans, and Queer Support Services (FPMTQSS) is designed to enhance the educational experience of a multi-cultural student population and to increase their retention and graduation rates through support services on academic, personal, and career matters; academic interventions and innovations; needs assessment; referrals to on- and off-campus resources; promoting and providing campus-wide educational and cultural programming in support of diversity and inclusion; and multicultural community-building activities for students, staff, and faculty. FPMTQSS is part of the Inclusive Excellence and Student Success division. The incumbent in this position is an important campus resource person regarding the areas of race, culture, diversity, and inclusion and must be familiar with methodologies and best practices which will advance the college regarding these issues, and be available for consultation with faculty, staff, and students. The position reports to the Director of First Peoples Multicultural Trans and Queer Support Services and Climate and Belonging Education.The position develops and expands collaborative initiatives across curricular and co-curricular domains, including partnerships with Academic and Career Advising, Access Services for Students with Disabilities, TRiO Student Success and College Access Programs, Admissions, Student Activities, Residential and Dining Services, Recreation and Athletics, Student Wellness Services, Center for Community Bases Learning and Action, Writing Center, Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center, Registration and Records, and Academic Affairs.This position requires knowledge of the history, role, theory, and practice of student development programs in higher education and experience with application of student development. Comprehensive understanding and practice of the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion are woven into all functions of this position, including identification and elimination of barriers to students, and recruiting and retaining a diverse student body and professional leadership within Equity, Inclusion, and Student Development broadly stated.Essential FunctionsWork with the Director to provide oversight and stewardship in the development of a comprehensive range of services, resources, and programs that advance equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence.Implement strategic leadership and management of FPMTQSS, including the Student Equity and Arts Lounge, Multicultural Scholars Program, and related department events and programs.Lead and run the Multicultural Scholars Pre-Orientation Program.Assist the Director in creating department goals and develop implementation strategies, establish learning outcomes, develop effective assessment tools, coordinate assessment efforts, and prepare annual reports and summaries for the department.Coordinate and maintain oversight for daily delivery of services provided by FPMTQSS staff and student peers.Supervise FPMTQSS exempt staff, including recruitment, development, evaluation, and addressing performance issues, as needed.Facilitate the design and implementation of culturally responsive engagement and retention programs, including a comprehensive dialogue program designed to enhance intercultural awareness and ways to explore the intersection of race, gender, religion, socio-economic class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, national origin, and many other aspects of identity; programs should contain strong outreach, academic and personal support, community-building, referral services, and tracking of activities.Manage student concerns that merit a midrange-level review; serve as a contact for students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members needing assistance and direction related to student support services; and provide elevated response to students’ requests for assistance with academic, personal, or professional planning and problem-solving.Provide faculty consultation, to support the needs of students of color, LGBTQQIAAP, undocumented/DACAmented students, and/or to enhance awareness of multicultural issues in the classroom.Consult with Admissions to host Preview Days and Open Houses.Serve as a consultant to student services and faculty across the campus to develop training programs that will enhance cross-cultural communication between students, staff, and faculty.Monitor recruitment and retention rates for students who identify as students of color, first-generation, LGBTQQIAAP, and/or undocumented/DACAmented; assist staff and faculty in improving educational outcomes for traditionally underserved groups through community building and identity based co-curricular activities.Manage the programming budget for FPMTQSS by monitoring expenditures and assessing needs for funding to accomplish the goals for programming for the unit.Oversee the design and delivery of an innovative and effective multicultural leadership program for student employees associated with the Student Equity and Arts Lounge.Support Coordinators in developing proposals for office or college-wide initiatives such as learning opportunities (e.g., speakers, resources, topical discussion groups), community-building events (e.g., SEAL potlucks, Trans and Queer Center events, FPMTQSS and Lavender graduations), and retention-related projects aimed at multicultural student populations.Partner with other college units (i.e., Student Activities, Academic and Career Advising, Student Wellness Services, Academics, and Residential and Dining Services) to design and implement campus programming to advance equity and inclusion.With other college offices and staff, participate in the collection, maintenance, interpretation, distribution, and utilization of the data regarding students of color, first-generation, LGBTQQIAAP, and undocumented/DACAmented students.Lead and participate in hiring committees, college task forces, and other projects as directed.Assist the Director in developing, implementing, and maintaining a strategic plan for student multiculturalism that reflects the unique nature of the college.Collaborate with Enrollment Services, Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic and Career Advising, Access Services, Upward Bound and TRiO Programs, and Registration to ensure the smooth transition of students into the college environment.Act as a resource person with the various communities (Tacoma, Olympia, and Tribal Programs) from which Evergreen students have come or in which they reside.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesComprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, including skill and ability identifying and eliminating barriers to students, resource allocation, strategic planning, recruiting and hiring individuals of diverse backgrounds, and recruiting and retaining a diverse student body and professional leadership within Equity, Inclusion, and Student Development broadly stated.Ability to engage with sensitivity and awareness to the needs of diverse student populations, and to engage in effective leadership that supports student learning, development, retention, and recruitment in an equitable and inclusive college environment.Knowledge of engagement and retention issues pertaining to diverse student populations, particularly those which are marginalized in higher education, including the ability to engage with students who identify as marginalized, first-generation, low-income, Latinx, LGBTQQIAAP, and undocumented/DACAmented students.Familiarity with developmental process of students and understanding of cultural adjustment processes of college for first-generation, low-income, LGBTQQIAAP, and undocumented/DACAmented students.Knowledge of and ability to develop and administer a high quality multicultural leadership and retention program, including outreach, community-building, referral services, and tracking activities in a higher education environment.Excellent supervisory skills and abilities, including the ability to supervise and coach a diverse staff, successfully train and direct the work of others, evaluate performance, and address job performance issues.Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, including presentation and conflict resolution skills and the ability to communicate complex policy and financial information to internal and external audiences in clear, concise, and logical prehensive understanding and practice of multiculturalism.Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, particularly those which are underrepresented in higher education.Willingness to participate in and support the efforts of the college to create diverse, equitable, and inclusive student communities and spaces.Skill in program, event, and workshop design, delivery, facilitation, and assessment.Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.Familiarity with methodologies, innovations, and information dissemination strategies that promote productive dialogue and interactions regarding multiculturalism, race, gender, and social justice issues.Current knowledge of state and national trends and regulations related to culturally diverse student populations.Ability to track and manage a departmental budget that benefits from multiple funding sources.Skill in and ability to collect and analyze data and produce reports.Ability to plan work strategically and maintain organizational long-term goals, visions, and objectives.Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with FERPA.Ability to follow relevant Washington state and federal laws, administrative codes, college policies and collective bargaining agreements.Minimum QualificationsMaster's degree in Education, Counseling, Educational Administration, Student Personnel Administration, or related field.Two years of full-time professional or graduate experience in a higher education setting working in student leadership development and event planning.Desired QualificationsTwo years relevant student development experience, including progressive responsibility that includes work at an associate or assistant director level supervising full-time professional serving traditionally under-represented student populations.Experience in program development, implementation, and assessment.Experience in making public presentations. ................
