Purpose of the role

Leading and giving strategic direction to the communications team and taking responsibility for all marketing activities within the charity

Developing communications and marketing strategies and plans that cover the full mix of communications and marketing tools, including media and public relations, internal communications, brand marketing, advertising, direct marketing, digital and social media and production of materials.

Implementing a marketing and communications strategy to build brand awareness, market services, promote income generation, communicate programmes, activities, and impact

To be responsible for market research and needs analysis among those affected by lymphoma and the healthcare professionals who work with them.

Act as a `brand guardian' ensuring consistency across all internal and external communications

Report on and analyse all aspects of communications and marketing, and ensure effective evaluation mechanisms are in place to measure success.

Keep up to date on best practice within the charity sector generally and particularly changes to communications innovation, legislation and codes of practice

To lead, line manage and support (including carrying out regular supervision and appraisals) the Marketing and Communications team within the wider Fundraising and Communications Directorate.

To ensure effective and successful marketing and communications plans are in place for all aspects of the organisation's work, products and services, including support services, patient information, publishing products (including Lymphoma Matters magazine), and education and training services.

To lead, manage and plan key organisational marketing and communications initiatives, such as Lymphatic Cancer Awareness Week.

To carry out market research and needs analysis on Lymphoma Action's key audiences.

To be responsible for brand management, including brand awareness and adherence to brand and corporate identity guidelines.

To oversee the design, production and dissemination of marketing and communications collateral, as required.

In conjunction with the Digital Manager, to ensure the implementation, operation, monitoring and review of the organisation's digital strategy, including website maintenance and development.

In conjunction with the PR and Public Affairs Manager, to be responsible for the organisation's media, PR and public affairs work, ensuring appropriate strategies and plans are in place.

To ensure the accurate and compliant collection and use of personal information and data on supporters, donors, and potential audiences.

To promote equality and diversity by ensuring that communications are accessible and representative of the diverse range of people affected by lymphoma.

To review and develop mechanisms for improved internal communications to staff and volunteers.

To liaise with external suppliers and freelancers, as required.

To represent Lymphoma Action's marketing and communications work at appropriate forums throughout the UK, as necessary.

To provide regular information and reports to the Director of Fundraising and Communications, Chief Executive and Board of Trustees, as required, including attending business management meetings.

To support the Director of Fundraising and Communications and Senior Fundraising Manager in fundraising and communications strategy development and implementation.

To work collaboratively with other managers and staff, and to contribute significantly to the business management of Lymphoma Action and be a key part of the organisation's wider business planning processes.

To meet with the Director of Fundraising and Communications for the purpose of regular supervision and annual appraisal.

To participate in staff training, organisation/team meetings and events, as required. To keep up-to-date with developments and learning in the field of cancer-related patient

information and support. To comply with the organisation's health and safety, confidentiality, data protection and

other policies. Any other duties deemed appropriate by the chief executive, subject to time and

commensurate with level of responsibility and salary.

Person specification

Education, experience and knowledge

Educated to degree level or equivalent experience that demonstrates ability.

Relevant marketing and/or communications qualification.

At least two years' experience of working in a senior role within a not-for-profit marketing and communications environment.

Experience of delivering successful, integrated appeals and campaigns through a range of marketing channels.

A proven track record of successful marketing and communications campaigns and activity.

Desirable, but not essential: Experience of working within the health/cancer services sector.

Skills and abilities

Excellent and engaging communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

Ability to devise, implement and develop long-term plans and strategies.

Ability to lead a team of staff.

Strong budgeting, business planning and financial monitoring skills.

Ability to think strategically and creatively regarding the long-term development of an organisation's marketing and communications work.
