POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of Development is an integral leadership role in the continued success of the Alaska Aviation Museum.  The Director leads a development program to create and implement strategies for all charitable giving particularly special campaigns, major gifts, planned giving and memberships.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Directs a comprehensive development program for the Museum based on a formalized development plan, marketing strategy and budget that assures adequate funding for programs, services and special projects by securing financial resources from foundations, corporations and individuals.

Develops and implements long-range strategic fundraising priorities, advances the Museum’s goals, and communicates the fundraising vision to the board of directors, and community members raising funds and ensures coordination of efforts with executive director and fellow staff.

Manages all major gifts functions including donor prospecting, research, cultivation, stewardship and solicitation, planned giving and special fundraising campaigns.

Creates written materials for use with donor solicitations and communications and oversees development of campaign materials. Provides coordination for all external museum publications.

Participates in Museum-wide strategic planning and budgeting initiatives.

Capacity to think strategically and initiate creative problem solving within the guidelines, policies, values and mission of the Museum and is accountable for specific projects as assigned.

Exemplifies the Museum’s value statements, vision and mission in all actions, communications and relationships.

Ensures ethical compliance as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field plus advanced business and/or fundraising training. 

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fundraising management, including experience with donor solicitation and capital campaigns.

Record of successful career growth leading to management responsibilities, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of a development effort.  Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.

Knowledge of current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation and capital campaigns.

Demonstrated success in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.

Superb communications and presentation skills; ability to persuasively communicate the vision, mission and values of Museum to diverse groups including major donors, corporate executives, board members and others who are critical to the organization’s growth and continued success.

Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and attention to detail with a fluent command of information systems and associated software. Attention to detail is a core competency of this position. Candidate must possess the ability to handle details and incidentals related to the job without depending on someone else to do follow-up calls, write up reports, and respond to requests for more information.  The position requires preparing detailed and timely reports to executive director and the Board. 

Highly collaborative work style, able to balance implementation of specific goals and tasks with fostering cooperation and consensus.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT

Oversees annual development plan and budget. Manages special campaigns, projects and budget, and ensures that campaign financial reports and prospect tracking reports are accurate and current. Oversees all campaign and donor acknowledgements.

For special campaigns, acts as primary contact for assigned committees and tracks progress of every committee.

Design, implement and direct multiple projects, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Professional appearance is a critical element of fundraising success. Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.  This position requires the ability to go out and meet with people anywhere in the surrounding community at any time of day or night, including weekends.  Must be prepared to work “off hours” and to have own transportation to go wherever is needed to meet with potential donors.
