TEMPERA BEATEN AT NAD AL SHEBA

Eclipse Award-winner Tempera (A.P. Indy), making her three-year-old debut in the UAE 1000 Guineas yesterday, could not keep pace with Godolphin stablemate Infinite Spirit (Maria's Mon) and had to settle for second, beaten five lengths. "Tempera was very disappointing," Simon Crisford, Godolphin's racing manager, said. "She came into it having worked nicely and she seemed fine after Infinite Spirit at Nad al Sheba A Watkins the race. We expected her to run well. We will now wait and reassess matters." Infinite Spirit, on the other hand, pleased connections with her handy front-running victory. The chestnut, runner-up while facing colts in the Listed Silver Tankard S. at Pontefract last October, came back in the Jan. 31 Moonshell Mile Prep at Nad Al Sheba and posted a 3 3/4-length score. "Infinite Spirit has a high cruising speed," winning jockey John Carroll said. "When [jockey Frankie Dettori, aboard Tempera] came at me at the 300-metre mark, I knew how well I was going and I knew my filly would respond and she did so impressively. Whether she can measure up to the Classics later remains to be seen, but she is going the right way. She is improving and she is definitely a Group filly." Race Chart p. 2

BELTERRA RETURNS IN BONNIE MISS

One of last year's top two-year-old fillies, unbeaten Belterra (Unbridled) will make her 2002 debut in the nine-furlong GII Bonnie Miss S. this afternoon at Gulfstream Park. The Triple Crown nominee rallied to break her maiden in her debut going seven furlongs at Keeneland in October, then demolished Churchill allowance rivals by 10 1/4 lengths in a mile test on Halloween. The bay filly then collected the GII Golden Rod S. by 4 1/2 lengths Nov. 24, with Take Charge Lady finishing second. Off since then, she has progressed nicely through a series of workouts. "I worked Belterra on Monday [five furlongs in 1:00] and it was an easy work for her," trainer Carl Nafzger said. "I worked her hard in her previous work [six furlongs from the gate in 1:12 3/5]. She hasn't been out since she won the Golden Rod at Churchill Downs last November, but she's been training well and is in great shape." Stretchrunning Ms Brookski (Montbrook) bounced back from a poor run in the GIII Herecomesthebride S. on turf to take the GII Davona Dale S. Feb. 24. Making their stakes debuts are Dust Me Off (With Approval) and Nonsuch Bay (Mr. Greeley). A debut winner at Calder, Dust Me Off bled when sixth in a turf allowance at Gulfstream Jan. 16, but got Lasix for the first time Feb. 20 and responded with a wire-to-wire victory in a tough two-turn allowance over this surface. "She's a young and improving filly," said trainer Allen Jerkens. "I think she deserves a chance to run in there and it's time to see what she's made of. We found she bled in her second start. She won very nicely when she raced with Lasix in her last start and she's been training well."

P TRIPLE THREATS P

Sunday, Santa Anita SAN FELIPE S.-GII, $250,000, 3yo, 1 1/16m

U S S Tinosa (Foxhound) blew out three furlongs in :36.60 at Santa Anita Thursday. "It's just a little blowout," said trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. "I just want him to get a feel for the track."

Stephentown Injured: Stephentown (Wild Again) was not entered in tomor-

row's GI Florida Derby after injuring his shoulder during a morning workout Tuesday. Trainer Tony Reinstedler said the injury was not serious, however. "Stephentown is doing well," he said. "If the race was on Monday, then maybe he could run it. But he's too nice a horse to take a chance with, so I had to go to the bench." Reinstedler will instead saddle Peekskill (Meadowlake) in the $1-million event. The colt comes off a fifth-place finish in the GIII Palm Beach S. on the grass Feb. 22. "Peekskill will be my [Florida] Derby horse," he said. "He has run good over this track and I don't think he liked the turf in his last start. I know we're taking a shot...but this is a crazy game and crazy things happen. Maybe it can happen again on Saturday."

Scan for Came Home: Came Home (Gone West) will undergo a precaution-

ary nuclear scan on Friday. The colt was found cast in his stall on Tuesday. He returned to the track for a 1 1/2-mile gallop yesterday. "So far, he looks okay," said trainer Paco Gonzalez. "He galloped real good today. There's no heat or anything wrong with him that we found, but we just want to make sure [with the diagnostic test]."

A # will distinguish first-time stakes-winners, a @ will

indicate first-time graded stakes-winners, a s will

denote a first-time Grade/Group 1 winner, a + will denote winners who are first-time starters. Post times are listed in local times.

Easy Grades Works: Easy Grades (Honor Grades), runner-up to Came

Home in the GII San Rafael, worked four furlongs Monday at Santa Anita in :47. The colt starts next in the Apr. 6 GI Santa Anita Derby. "He came out of [the San Rafael] surprisingly well," said trainer Ted West. "I thought that race might have taken something out of him, he ran hard and was four wide all the way around, but he hasn't missed an oat since. That's what you want to see [from a three-year-old] this time of year."

Request for Parole Breezes for Spiral: Top Turfway-based three-year-old Request for Parole

(Judge T C) had his final major tune-up for the Mar. 23 GII Lane's End Spiral S., breezing three-quarters in 1:14 3/5 Thursday morning. "It was just what I wanted," said trainer Steve Margolis. "I wanted a long, slow work. He has plenty of tactical speed, so I didn't need to put any speed into him." The colt's connections announced earlier this week that Pat Day would replace Brian Peck for the Spiral. "The owners had said that if we make it this far, they wanted the best rider available," explained Margolis. "We are very excited to have Pat. We're hoping he can get him to sit back a little more and have a little more finish going 1 1/8 miles." Second to Repent in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. last fall, Request for Parole has won back-to-back stakes at Turfway this year, the WEBN Frog S. Feb. 2 and the John Battaglia Memorial S. one month later. Others expected for the Spiral include Benny the Hawk (Benny the Dip), Gold Dollar (Seattle Slew), Holdthehelm (Helmsman), Perfect Drift (Dynaformer), Saratoga Blues (Twining) and Straight Gin (Go for Gin), with My Man Ryan (Mutakddim) listed as possible.

Oaklawn Purse Increase: Officials at Oaklawn announced yesterday that purses

will be raised for the third time this season. The increase, to take effect Saturday, will boost the value of claiming races by $500, with allowance and maiden special weight contests seeing a jump of $1,000.

Yesterday's Results: 7th-FGX, $30,000, Alw, 3yo, a1mT, 1:42, fm. NO MORE CHADS (c, 3, Atticus--Crossing Over, by Kris S.) made his bow on the turf at Aqueduct Nov. 1, settling for sixth after a wide trip. Following a threemonth respite, he came back to break his maiden against $20,000 claimers at Fair Grounds Feb. 16. Bettors looked skeptically at the brown colt in his first allowance test here, letting him go to post as a 17-1 longshot, a decision they may now regret as he came from off the pace in the last furlong to get up to score by a neck over Emberglow (Afternoon Deelites). Fifty horses from the Estate of Bart D. Heller and a 26-head entry from the Cavanaugh Family Trust will go under the hammer. Among the Heller dispersal are 15 yearlings, 14 twoyear-olds in training and 21 horses of racing age, including stakes winners Sea to See (Al Mamoon), Spinelessjellyfish (Skywalker) and Mellow Fellow (Belek).
