Summary of Windows 10 Procedures (Rev. 2)

(for Windows 10 “Fall Creators Update,” Version 1803)

Display version of Windows 10 running on computer:

1. Open Start menu:

2. Type “winver” and then hit enter

General Settings:

Select color scheme:

1. Open Start menu:

2. Type “color settings” and then hit enter

3. Uncheck “Automatically pick an accent color from my background”

4. Under “Show accent color on the following surfaces” heading, check both the “Start, taskbar, and action center” and “Title bars” options

5. Select color you’d like to use from grid at top of window

6. Under “Choose your default app mode” heading, click either “Light” or “Dark” bubble

7. Click “X” at top-right to close window

Change size of text, icons, and apps:

1. Right-click desktop and select “Display settings” from drop-down menu

2. Click “Custom scaling” link under the “Change the size of text, apps, and other items” heading

3. Enter desired amount of enlargement in the field entitled “Enter a custom scaling size between 100%-500% (not recommended)”

4. Click “Apply” button

5. Click “X” at top-right to close window

6. Restart computer to make changes to display scaling take effect

Make mouse pointer easier to see:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “pointers” and then hit enter

3. Click “Pointers” tab at top of window that now opens

4. Select desired pointer style from “Scheme” drop-down menu

5. Click “OK” button at bottom to close window

Show/hide common desktop icons:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “themes and related settings” and then hit enter

3. Click “Desktop icon settings” link under “Related Settings” heading

4. Check icons you want displayed on desktop

5. Click “OK” button at bottom to close window

Show extensions for known file types:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “file explorer options” and then hit enter

3. Click “View” tab at top of window

4. Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types”

5. Click “OK” button at bottom to close window

Start Menu Settings:

Switch between Start menu and Start screen:

1. Click ”action center” button to the right of clock on Windows taskbar to open Action Center

2. Click “Tablet mode” button to toggle between Start menu and start screen

3. Hit escape to exit action center

Quickly navigate to any entry in the Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Click any single character in the (now open) menu to display a list of all characters that have entries beginning with that particular letter, number, or symbol associated with them—(Only highlighted characters have associated menu entries. The remaining un-highlighted characters do not have any associated entries.)

3. Click any of the highlighted characters to jump immediately to its location in the Start menu, and then click the entry of interest below that character

Put shortcut to program/file on Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type name of program/file of interest and hit enter to begin search

3. Once located, right-click on appropriate search result and select “Pin to Start” from drop-down menu

Resize shortcut:

1. Right-click shortcut you wish to resize and hover mouse over “Resize” option

2. In menu that opens to the side, select desired size from the list below: (Note that all size options may not be available for every shortcut.)

• “Small”—(half as wide and half as tall as “Medium” shortcut)

• “Medium”

• “Wide”—(twice as wide as “Medium” shortcut)

• “Large”—(twice as wide and twice as tall as “Medium” shortcut)

Enable/disable “Live Tiles” in Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Right-click on particular tile (shortcut) of interest and select either the “Turn Live Tile on” or “Turn Live Tile off” option from the drop-down menu that now appears—(If the aforementioned options are not visible, they can be found by clicking the “More” entry in the drop-down menu.)

Remove shortcut to program/file from Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Right-click shortcut you’d like to remove and select the “Unpin from Start” option from drop-down menu—(Note that this does not remove the actual program/file from your computer or delete its entry from the app list on the left.)

Combine two or more shortcuts to programs/files into a single folder within the Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Click-and-drag one shortcut onto another to create a new folder into which additional shortcuts can be added later

Remove shortcut to program/file from folder within the Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Click-and-drag shortcut you wish to relocate to a blank spot in Start menu outside the folder that originally contained it

Resize the Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Click-and-drag top border of Start menu to resize menu vertically—(Note that if you remove all shortcuts from the Start menu, you will also be able to resize the Start menu horizontally by clicking-and-dragging the right border of the menu. In this way, you’ll be able to make the portion of the Start menu containing the shortcuts disappear, thereby displaying only the apps list that remains.)

Hide/unhide app list on left side of Start menu:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “start menu” and hit enter

3. Toggle “Show app list in Start menu” to either “On” or “Off”

4. Click “X” at top-right to close window

Hide/unhide ”recently added” and “most used” lists at top of apps list:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “start menu” and hit enter

3. Do one (or both) of the following:

• Toggle “Show recently added apps” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Show most used apps” option “On” or “Off”

4. Click “X” at top-right to close window

Select which folders/windows appear to the left of the apps list:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “start menu” and hit enter

3. Click link entitled “Choose which folders appear on Start” near bottom of “Settings” window

4. Do one (or more) of the following:

• Toggle “File Explorer” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Settings” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Documents” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Downloads” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Music” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Pictures” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Videos” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “HomeGroup” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Network” option “On” or “Off”

• Toggle “Personal folder” option “On” or “Off”

5. Click “X” at top-right to close window

6. Now, whenever the Start button is clicked, you will see buttons for the folders/windows you’ve just added displayed immediately above the Start button to the left of the apps list—(To expand this area in order to see the textual labels for these buttons, click the button with the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner of the start menu.)

Taskbar Settings:

Put shortcut to program/file on taskbar:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type name of program/file of interest and hit enter to begin search

3. Once located, right-click on appropriate search result and select “Pin to taskbar” from drop-down menu—(If the “Pin to taskbar” option is not visible, it can be accessed by clicking the “More” entry in the drop-down menu.)

Remove shortcut to program/file from taskbar:

1. Right-click on taskbar shortcut (button) you’d like to remove and select “Unpin from taskbar” from drop-down menu

Add special buttons to (or remove special buttons from) Windows taskbar: (Perform the following procedure for each button you’d like to add or remove.)

1. Right-click taskbar

2. In menu that now appears, click to select/deselect one of the following buttons:

• “Search”

• “Show Task View button”

• “Show people button”

• “Show Windows Ink Workspace button”

• “Show touch keyboard button”

3. The selected/deselected button should now either be added to (or removed from) the taskbar

Add special toolbars to (or remove special toolbars from) the Windows taskbar: (Perform the following procedure for each toolbar you’d like to add or remove.)

1. Right-click taskbar

2. In menu that now appears, hover mouse over “Toolbars” option at the top

3. In list of toolbars that opens off to the side, click to select/deselect one of the following toolbars:

• “Address”—(displays field where you can type in a web address)

• “Links”—(shows any links that might be present on IE’s or Edge’s “Favorites bar”)

• “Desktop”—(shows contents of desktop)

• “New toolbar”—(displays contents of any selected folder)—To add a “New toolbar,” follow these steps:

a. Browse to the folder you would like to display as a toolbar on the Windows taskbar, and click it to select it

b. Click “Select Folder” button at bottom of window to close window and display selected toolbar on Windows taskbar

4. The selected/deselected toolbar should now either be added to (or removed from) the taskbar

Change size of taskbar buttons:

1. Right-click taskbar

2. Select “Taskbar settings” option from menu that appears

3. In “Taskbar” window that now opens, toggle “Use small taskbar buttons” to either “On” or “Off”

4. Click “X” at top-right to close window

Desktop Settings:

Put shortcut to program/file/folder on desktop:

1. Depending on how easy it is to locate the item for which you would like to create a shortcut, first do one of the following:

a. If the item you wish to link to can be found in the Start menu, follow these steps:

i. Open Start menu

ii. Type name of program/file/folder of interest and hit enter to begin search

iii. Once located, right-click on appropriate search result and select “Open file location” from drop-down menu—(If the “Open file location” option is not visible, it can be found by clicking the “More” entry in the drop-down menu.)

iv. In window that now opens, right-click-and-drag item of interest to desired location on desktop and release mouse button

b. If the item you wish to link to cannot be found in the Start menu, (but you know its location on your computer), follow these steps:

i. Browse to location of program/file/folder of interest

ii. Right-click-and-drag item to desired location on desktop, and release mouse button

2. Then, in context menu that now opens, select “Create shortcuts here” option

3. Click “X” at top-right to close (previously-opened) window

Minimize all open windows to “peek” at desktop:

1. Click very thin vertical rectangle at far right of Windows taskbar to minimize all open windows and show desktop

2. Click very thin vertical rectangle again to restore all minimized windows

“Snap” window to left half/right half or corner of desktop: (Do one of the following.)

• Click window title bar and quickly drag to desired location on desktop

• Click on/in window, then release mouse, and finally hold down Windows key while tapping appropriate arrow key(s) to maneuver window to desired desktop location

Enable/disable “snapping:”

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “multitasking settings” and hit enter

3. Drag slider under “Arrange windows automatically by dragging them to the sides or corners of the screen” to toggle “On” or “Off”

4. Click “X” at top-right to close window

Use “Task switcher” to sequentially navigate to a particular window within a collection of (already open) windows: (Do one of the following.)

• For a temporary display of all open windows, hold down alt key, tap tab key until you reach desired window, and then release alt key

• For a longer-lasting display of all open windows, simultaneously press control+alt+tab keys, and then either click the desired window or tab to it and press enter

Use “Task view” to immediately navigate to a particular window within a collection of (already open) windows:

1. Hold down Windows+tab keys to bring up “Task view” window

2. Click on window you wish to open

Create new “Virtual desktop” and switch to it: (Do one of the following.)

• Simultaneously press Windows+control+d keys

• Open the “Task view” window by holding down the Windows+tab keys, and then click the “New desktop” button (with the “+” sign on it) at bottom-right of the screen

Switch to “Virtual desktop” on the left:

1. Simultaneously press Windows+control+left-arrow keys

Switch to “Virtual desktop” on the right:

1. Simultaneously press Windows+control+right-arrow keys

Delete current “Virtual desktop” and move all open windows to “Virtual desktop” on the left:

1. Simultaneously press Windows+control+F4 keys

Windows “Timeline:”

• To use the “Timeline” feature to resume an activity you engaged in previously--(up to 30 days in the past),--please do the following:

1. Hold down Windows+tab keys to bring up “Task view” window

2. Click-and-drag the (vertical) slider to the right and navigate to the day/time when you last engaged in the activity of interest

3. Among the list of previous activities (located below the display of “virtual desktops” and currently-open windows), find the activity you wish to resume and click on it to return to the approximate place where you left off

• To access (global) options that help manage the collection and retention of “Activity history” and the availability of “Activity history” information among your other devices, please proceed as follows:

1. Open Start menuType “settings” and hit enter

2. Click “Privacy” to select that particular category of “Windows Settings"

3. Click “Activity history” in the menu on the leftf

4. Select from one or more of the following options:

o If you want to store “Activity history” for future access on the present device, check the “Store my activity history on this device” option

o If you want to share “Activity history” among your other devices (that use the same logon credentials), check the “Send my activity history to Microsoft” option

o If you want to delete any past “Activity history” that might have been collected on the present device, click the “Clear” button near the bottom of the window

• To access (more granular) options that help manage the “Timeline” display, please proceed as follows:

o To remove a single activity from the display, right-click on it and select the “Remove” option from the drop-down menu

o To remove all activities earlier in the same day, right-click on any activity on the current date and select the “Clear all from Earlier Today” option from the drop-down menu

o To remove all activities on a particular date, right-click on any activity on the date you wish to purge and select the “Clear all from… (the date in question)” option from the drop-down menu

Miscellaneous Tasks:

Scroll up and down through background window:

1. Hover mouse over background window you wish to scroll through

2. Roll mouse wheel (or use two-finger gesture on touchpad) to scroll—(Unlike many older versions of Windows, it is not necessary to first click in/on the window through which you wish to scroll.)

Move up one level in a nested folder structure:

1. Click in/on window you wish to navigate out of

2. Hold down alt key while simultaneously tapping the Up-arrow key—(once for each level you want to move up in the folder structure)

Automatically launch program or open document when Windows starts:

1. Open Start menu

2. Type “run” and then hit enter

3. In “Run” box, type “shell:startup” and then hit enter

4. Copy shortcut to program/document of interest into “Startup” window

5. Click “X” at top-right to close “Startup” window

6. Program/document should now open automatically each time Windows starts

Quickly locate any file if the modification date is known, but the file name cannot be remembered:

1. Open folder where file is believed to reside

2. In the “Search” field near the top-right corner of the (now open) folder window, type the following (without the quotes): “modified:mm/dd/yy” (where “mm/dd/yy” are the (two-digit) month, day, and year (respectively) when the file was last modified). To search over a range of dates, use the following syntax (again, without the quotes): “modified:mm/dd/yy .. mm/dd/yy” (where the first instance of “mm/dd/yy” is the beginning of the range of modification dates, and the second instance of “mm/dd/yy” is the end of the range). Also note that there is a space both before and after the two periods.)

3. The file(s) of interest should now be displayed in the folder window

Generate a .pdf file from any document that can be printed:

1. Open document to be converted to .pdf format in its associated application

2. Open application’s “Print” dialogue

3. In “Select Printer” menu, select “Microsoft Print to PDF”

4. Click “Print” button at bottom of “Print” dialogue

5. In “Save Print Output As” window, browse to the location where you would like to save the .pdf file, give it a name, and click the “Save” button at bottom to complete the process

Edge Browser Settings:

Enable/disable “Reading view” in Edge browser:

1. In Edge browser, navigate to page you wish to view in “Reading view”

2. Please note:

• If a page cannot be displayed in “Reading view,” the book-shaped button to the right of the address bar should appear grayed out instead of dark or blue. In such a case, clicking the “Reading view” button will accomplish nothing.

• If a page can be displayed in “Reading view,” the book-shaped button to the right of the address bar should appear dark instead of grayed out or blue. In such a case, clicking the “Reading view” button will toggle from normal view to “Reading view,” and cause the button to turn blue.

• If a page is currently being displayed in “Reading view,” the book-shaped button to the right of the address bar should appear blue instead of dark or grayed out. In such a case, clicking the “Reading view” button will toggle from “Reading view” to normal view, and cause the button to turn dark again.

Change “Text size” or “Page theme” while in Edge “Reading view:”

1. While in “Reading view” (when book-shaped button to the right of the address bar is blue), click once in empty area of page being displayed

2. In black bar that now appears across the top of the page, click the “Options” button (with the two capital letters “A” on it, arranged diagonally)

3. In window that now opens to the right, do one/both of the following:

• Use “Aˇ” and “Aˆ” buttons to adjust “Text size”

• Click “Light,” “Sepia,” or “Dark” button to specify “Page theme”

4. Click “Options” button again to close window

Enable/disable “Read aloud” mode in Edge browser:

1. In Edge browser, navigate to page you wish to have read aloud in “Read aloud” mode

2. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

3. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Read aloud”—(This will enable the “Read aloud” mode, and the page that is open will now start to be read aloud.)

4. In black bar that now appears across the top of the page, use “Previous paragraph,” “Play”/”Pause,” and “Next paragraph” buttons to navigate through page being read

5. When done, click “X” at far right of black bar to close bar and disable “Read aloud” mode

Change reading “Speed” or “Voice” type while in Edge “Read aloud” mode:

1. While in “Read aloud” mode, click “Voice settings” button (showing sound waves emanating from a head and shoulders) located on the right of the black bar across top of page being read

2. In window that now opens to the right, do one/both of the following:

• Click-and-drag “Speed” slider to adjust reading speed

• From “Voice” pull-down menu, select desired reading voice

3. Click “Voice settings” button again to close window

Select Edge “theme:”

1. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

2. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Settings”

3. Select either “Light” or “Dark” theme from “Choose a theme” menu

4. Click “…” button again to close “Settings” menu

Set Edge home page:

1. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

2. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Settings”

3. Under “Open Microsoft Edge with” heading, select “A specific page or pages” option from drop-down menu

4. Type URL for desired home page in “Enter a URL” field--(Any unwanted URLs can be deleted by clicking the “X” button on the right.)

5. Click (floppy disk-shaped) “Save” button to the right

6. Click “X” at top-right to close Edge browser

7. Launch Edge browser again to view new home page

Change Edge’s default “search engine” to “Google:”

1. In Edge, browse to “”

2. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

3. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Settings”

4. Under “Advanced settings” heading, click “View advanced settings”

5. Under “Search in the address bar with,” click “Change search engine” button

6. Click to select “Google Search (discovered)” option

7. Click “Set as default” button

8. Click “…” button again to close “Settings” menu

Clear Edge browser cache:

1. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

2. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Settings”

3. Under “Clear browsing data,” click “Choose what to clear”

4. Check browsing history items you’d like to clear

5. Click “Clear” button

6. Click “…” button again to close “Settings” menu

Enable/disable Edge pop-up blocker:

1. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

2. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Settings”

3. Under “Advanced settings” heading, click “View advanced settings”

4. Toggle “Block pop-ups” to either “On” or “Off”

5. Click “…” button again to close “Settings” menu

Enable or Disable Flash in Edge:

1. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

2. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Settings”

3. Under “Advanced settings” heading, click “View advanced settings”

4. Toggle “Use Adobe Flash Player” to either “On” or “Off”

5. Click “…” button again to close “Settings” menu

Enable or disable audio for a particular tab in Edge:

1. Click the tiny loudspeaker shaped icon on the left of the tab you wish to control.

Set Edge “Downloads” folder to desired download location:

1. Click “…” button near top-right corner of Edge window

2. In drop-down menu that now appears, click “Settings”

3. Under “Advanced settings” heading, click “View advanced settings”

4. Under “Downloads” heading, below “Save downloaded files to,” click “Change” button

5. In “Select Folder” window, browse to desired download location, click it to select it, and then click “Select Folder” button at bottom to close window

6. Toggle “Ask me what to do with each download” to either “On” or “Off” (as desired)

7. Click “…” button again to close “Settings” men
