CONSUMERISM MODULE

INTRODUCTION

This module teaches students how to be a wise consumer. Students will learn what influences us as consumers, advertising methods, development of smart shopping skills, rights and responsibilities of consumers, and how to resolve consumer problems.

1. Locate the video/DVD called, “Cracking the Advertising Code”. Watch it with your partner. Write down 10 facts that you learned from this video.

2. Locate the ADVERTISING WORKSHEET. Fill in the information. Then using magazines and newspapers, find an advertisement that appeals to you. Write a paragraph describing the advertisement. Be sure to include the following in your paragraph- who is the advertisement appealing to (age, gender, interests, income level),what product information is found in the advertisement, interesting words or catch phrases, colors and designs in the advertisement that caught you attention.

3. On page 285 in APPLYING LIFE SKILLS, it states that one of the ways to resolve a consumer problem is to write a letter. Look at the sample letter of complaint in this binder. This person had a problem with a CD player. You are now going to write your own consumer complain letter. Imagine you purchased a computer that stopped working after only one week. The warranty does not cover the problem, and the store manager will not refund your money. Write a letter of complaint to the manufacturer to resolve your problem.

4. If time permits, access OJ SOFTWARE- PRICING RIGHT. Follow directions to play the game.
