My Philosophy of Student Discipline

The first few weeks of school integrally consist of the most fundamental moments to establish classroom practices and routines by creating rules and responsibilities together as a class community. I believe that students will take a greater responsibility for their learning and their behavior when they are all involved in creating the classroom environment from the beginning of the year. By instilling classroom and student expectations, routines and skills, students recognize how they are allowed to work and participate in the classroom independently, in a group, and with a partner. In my future classroom, my student discipline will be based on academic and social integrity that is developed by creating a classroom community that focuses on making students accountable for their behaviors and establishing mutual, respectful attitudes towards all members.

Immediately in the beginning of the school year, my students will learn how to appropriately act within the classroom. This includes their academic responsibilities and behaviors throughout all aspects of the school day. When my students feel that they have become active participants in the classroom's daily management, discipline becomes effective and meaningful. When the class makes these new rules and responsibilities, it will be my role to scaffold the creation of the resulting consequences for breaking or violating these new rules and responsibilities. My students must recognize the reason behind the discipline and how he or she can prevent the problem from occurring in the future. Students should be fully aware of the consequences that come as a result of breaking a rule before a behavior, problem, or conflict occur.

Making a student stand on the wall at recess as a method of discipline for a variety of behaviors or conflicts does not help the class or a student recognize the mistake or fault regardless of the severity of an issue. Rather, this event may worsen or cause more feelings of resentment within the class or a student which may further aggravate the issue. As discipline is integrated as part of a classroom management technique rather than an obvious, brutal punishment, it can most effectively be used to promote academic and behavioral growth as a classroom community.
