Objectives:

➢ Describe the tools and features available through Discovery Education streaming

➢ Identify opportunities for classroom integration

1. Getting Started – ; site offers digital resources and lesson plans for all content areas. Also offers Professional Development information and Networking opportunities.

2. [pic] streaming Search Features

• Conduct Keyword searches within specific media types, services, and grade bands

o Use Boolean Query; ex: revolution NOT industrial

o Use Quotation Marks to search for a specific phrase; ex: “Magic School Bus”

• Narrow a search using the criteria in the left navigation. Narrow searches by subject, grade, media type, video detail, materials, media pack, service, or source. Search filters can be removed.

• Grade Search – refine results

• Curriculum Standards Search

• Advanced Search link – find editable videos, closed captioned, Spanish titles

3. Search Results

• Search results within All Content return full videos followed by video segment. Other media types are listed on the left side of the screen.

• Additional information is revealed by rolling over the result.

• Results can be sorted by “Best Match”, “Most Popular”, or “Recently Added”.

4. Streaming & Downloading

• Click on thumbnail or video title to view the full video asset detail page.

• Video features:

o Printer friendly link – prints description

o Share link – email, post to Facebook, etc…

• Streaming video:

o Click on Play [pic] button to stream the video; play the entire video or play segments.

• Downloading video:

o Right click on the Download [pic] button to save video.

• Citations:

o DE requests that digital media be cited when used to create instructional materials.

o Highlight, copy, and paste citations

• Related Materials:

o Teacher Guides

o Student Handouts, Quizzes

• More to Explore: shows additional content related to selected title

5. My Content

• Feature that allows you to collect, organize, share, and retrieve your favorite DE streaming content.

• Purpose is to bookmark the resource. It does not initiate a playing or downloading procedure.

• Create sub-folders to organize your resources.

• Click on “Action” pull down menu to copy, delete, rename, move, share, or assign resources.

• School Content – users can “share” materials within the school.

• District Content – users can “share” materials across the district.

6. Teacher Center - teacher tools and resources

• Calendar:

o video content that presents important historic events, prominent people, commemorative events, and cultural celebrations

o organized by subject area

• Lesson Plan Library

o Lessons in eleven subject areas that correltate to DE straming videos

o Download in Microsoft Word or PDF format

• Thematic Focus

o Links to teacher resources, student activities and videos organized around a central theme.

7. My Builder Tools

• Assignment Builder

o Create online assignments, WebQuests and activities to incorporate digital media, quizzes, and website links

o Students access assignments through the Student Center

• Quiz Builder

o Incorporate video segments into interactive quizzes that students can access through the Student Center

o Search over 2,000 pre-made quizzes, choose individual questions, or write your own

• Writing Prompt Builder

o Stimulate the writing process with images that support declarative, persuasive, narrative, and expository writing exercises

o Search the library for pre-made prompts or create your own

8. My Classrooms

• Classroom Manager is a tool used to help you build and manage your classrooms and assignments.

• Students will soon be imported at the county level. You will have to set up your individual classes by selecting students’ names.

9. Professional Development

• Interactive Training - Web-based, self-paced lessons demonstrate best practices for using DE streaming digital media.

• Explore Discovery Education streaming – found on the right-hand side of the page; click on “Explore Now” to view short video clips on the fundamentals of using DE streaming.

• Trainer’s Toolkit –

o Download resources like the User Guide and the QuickStart guide

o One-page Information/Instruction Guides – found on the right-hand side of page – download one-page information sheets and instruction guides to help you with different applications
