The life of [pic]

Walt Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1901. When he was young his family moved to a farm in Missouri. As a child he grew close to his older brother, Roy. Roy was the only person who lived through the same awful nightmare that he did. Their father beat them on a regular basis; all it took was not living up to his expectations. When Walt was 16 years old, he decided he wanted to study art, so he went back to Chicago. At the age of 19, he started making cartoon ads to be shown in movie theaters. He didn't earn very much money, but he loved what he did.

When he turned 22, he moved to Los Angeles. Here he drew cartoons in his garage. He was absolutely fascinated by these. A cartoon is made by drawing many pictures and showing them one after another so quickly that the pictures become animated, or seem to move. He liked to make the characters do funny things.

A few years later, Walt moved to Kansas City and opened his first studio. He came up with his Mickey Mouse cartoon character in 1928. Although he had made his first silent cartoon called Plane Crazy, it was never released because sound was invented and added to cartoons and films before he could release it. Instead, Walt made Mickey Mouse a star in his first cartoon “Steamboat Willie”. It was the world's first fully-synchronized sound cartoon, which showed at the Colony Theater in New York on November 18th, 1928.

During the next ten years, Walt Disney invented Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale and many more cartoon characters that are famous to this day. Many people, children and adults alike, went to movie theaters to watch his short cartoons. This was just the beginning of his success!

"I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse.”

One day, he came up with a brilliant idea, one that would change the world. He decided that he was going to be the first person to create a full-length animated film. He hired only the best cartoonists in all the world to help create this masterpiece. He settled down to work and four years later he had finished “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. It was a lot of hard work, but he stuck with it, refused to quit, and became nationally recognized. The movie was a hit!

After that, Walt Disney continued to make many more long cartoons: “Bambi”, “Cinderella”, “101 Dalmatians”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Peter Pan”, ” “The Lion King”, “Aladdin”, “Pinnochio”, “Fantasia”, “Dumbo” and the list goes on. He created “Mary Poppins”, a movie with both real live people and cartoons. Later, he created Disneyland and Walt Disney World amusement parks, where even adults can have fun and act like a kid again.

Walt Disney had one of the most creative imaginations the world has ever known. Along with members of his staff, he received more than 950 honors and awards from all over the world. A total of 48 Academy Awards and seven Emmys have been won to date. Walt personally earned honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, USC, and UCLA to name only a few.

In 1955, Walt, invested $ 17 million into his Magic Kingdom; Disneyland. By 1980, more than 250 million people had been to Disneyland. All were entertained and came from all over the world to this popular southern California themepark attraction in Anaheim. Presidents, kings and queens, and royalty from all over the globe have been special guests at the hotel and park.

In 1965, Walt Disney felt he could really help improve the quality of life in America. He wanted to see if he could spur on innovation to help better the lives of people in modern cities. He directed the design on an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, or EPCOT, which could showcase an innovative living community, which is in Walt Disney World Florida. He did not live to see Walt Disney World completed.

Walt Disney’s dreams and community spirit live on today. He died on December 15th, 1966 from complications of a lung tumor. He was cremated and buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in southern California. Although Walt Disney is no longer with us, his company still continues to create numerous movies. This just goes to show you that you can change the world in some way. Whether it is big or small, right in your own town, or all across the nation, it can be done. He had an idea and went with it. He is and always will be one of the biggest parts of our history, ever!

"Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world."
