The following is a footprint for reading and understanding the concepts presented in Chapter 2: Motion in One Dimension. Please read through this entire footprint and then read the chapter. Skimming the chapter will not always help you. This was put together in order to help you to reach an understanding of these concepts.

Chapter 2-1: Displacement and Velocity

Define one dimensional motion. Give an example.

Simplest form of motion, i.e. commuter train on a straight track.

What is a frame of reference?

A coordinate system for specifying the precise location of objects in space.

How would making the station the frame of reference make measuring the motion of the train easier?

If an object is at rest, its position does not change with respect to a frame of reference.

Define displacement. Include the units.

The change in position of an object.

Compare and contrast distance and displacement.

Displacement can be positive/negative. Distance can only be positive. Both used to measure movement.

Is it possible to have a negative displacement? Explain your answer.

Yes. If an object travels left, it will be negative.

Is it possible to have a negative distance? Explain your answer.

No. Distance measures how far you went. It won't go below 0. Can't go negative distance.

Define velocity. Include the formula and the units.

How fast an object moves. Vavg = Δd / Δt

Compare and contrast speed and velocity.

Speed has no direction, only magnitude. Velocity describes motion with both a direction and a numerical value (magnitude) (how fast object moves).

During a race on level ground, Andra runs with an average velocity of 6.02 m/s to the east. What distance does Andra cover in 137 s? (p44)

On a D vs. T graph, the slope represents what quantity?

Average Velocity

When the line curves on a D vs. T graph, what is the object doing?

It accelerates

Chapter 2-2: Accleration

Define acceleration. Include the formula and units.

Measures the rate of change in velocity. [pic]

A shuttle bus slows to a stop with an average acceleration of -18 m/s2. How long does it take the bus to slow from 9.0 m/s to 0.0 m/s? (p 49)

As the shuttle bus comes to a sudden stop to avoid hitting a dog, it accelerates uniformly at -3.9 m/s2 as it slows from 12.0 m/s to 0 m/s. Find the time interval for the bus.

When the train is moving to the right and speeding up, what sign does your acceleration have?

Positive

When the train is moving to the right and slowing down, what sign does your acceleration have?

Negative

Look at figure 2-10 on pg 50. Where is the train traveling at a constant speed?

B

Look at figure 2-10 on pg 50. Where is the train slowing down?

C

Look at figure 2-10 on pg 50. Where is the train speeding up?

A

Copy Table 2-3.

[pic]

Why is the object still speeding up if both the velocity and acceleration are negative?

Because when it slows down the numbers will be positive and the object is still speeding up but its moving in a negative direction.

Look at figure 2-11 on pg 51. What is happening to the distance covered as time progresses?

It got larger.

Look at figure 2-11 on pg 51. What is happening to the speed as time progresses?

Its going faster.
