Make 2 copies of this by using copy/past into a single document. Upload to D2L dropbox when completed. Locate two LIVE distros. or are two of many site to search. Select the boot menu screen when your system starts up. Different manufacturers use specific keys to launch the boot menu on startup. Please refer to your specific manual or website. As and example: If you hit the F12 key on a Dell, it will go the boot menu.

1. Load the Live LINUX Distro

2. Provide the following:

a. Name of Distro

b. Load time. How long does it take to get to the desktop

c. Does it boot into a GUI or must you configure something to get it to work

d. Are the directions to load and run the Distro easy to follow?

e. Opinion of default desktop:

i. Appearance

ii. Easy of navigation

iii. Usefulness of desktop icons

iv. Is there an option to create a USB Boot drive

3. Completeness of OS install? By this I mean, what can you do with the computer?

a. Internet access correctly configures

b. Word processing program installed

c. Utilities installed

d. What other types of programs/features install with the Distro?

e. Is additional information about Distro easily available?

4. Take a screen shot of each Distro and paste into your document. If you cannot take a screen shot, take a photo and insert that into your document.

5. How do you update files and get new programs? Research mat be needed if not easily determined

6. Overall impression of Distro. Would you consider doing a complete install of the Distro for personal use? Explain

7. List three things you like and 3 you dislike about each Distro.(Pros and Cons)

8. Which Distro did you like most? Include at least three reasons for choice. Would you install and use LINUX on a computer? Why or why not?

9. CAUTION: IF YOU DECIDE TO INSTALL THE DISTRO, BE WARNED THAT IT WILL WIPE OUT YOUR SYSTEM. There are directions online to explain how to dual boot your computer. Another option is to install the distro into a virtual machine.

Optional extra credit (20- pts) If you are interested in running another OS on your system (Win 7 on a Mac OSX, Win 8, LINUX on a Mac or PC) you may try installing a Virtual Machine or VM as described below. If you are using Mac OSX, you will need to install Win 7 or 8 programs to complete some of the assignments) Win 7 or 8 is available for free from Dreamspark. Below are some resources to help. There are a number of VM programs and Virtual Box is just one of them. As this part is extra credit, I will be providing limited assistance.

The following links will help you install and configure Virtual Box. There a number of VM programs out there, but I have found that Virtual Box is easiest to configure. I understand easiest is a relative concept
