LIFE MEMBER AWARD – W.C.O.A. & W.O.A. OF SECTION 5
At the Fall Meeting in 1966, President Leo Bernabi proposed that the WCOA award Life Membership to those people who were not longer active in the association but had contributed to the association’s success over the years. The membership approved and the first Life Members, Tony Beisman, John McNab and Frank Reddy, were selected and were to be honored at the Spring Banquet in 1967. When the WCOA became the WOA, the practice was continued and the new WOA Constitution included a provision for Life Membership. Each Life Member has been presented the same type of plaque and has been invited as a guest at the annual banquet. Some have died or have not been heard from for many years, but each year, some have attended.

BERNABI AWARD WINNERS
This award is named after Leo Bernabi, one of the association’s founders, a past president and outstanding official who died in 1974. It is not an annual award. It is presented to a member of the association who has made outstanding contributions to wrestling.
Although Leo was known for starting the wrestling program at Spencerport and eventually becoming Superintendent of the district where one of the school’s bears his name, we remember him most as an outstanding official on both the high school and college levels. He was a very capable and energetic man. As the WOA of Section 5 President, he started the practice of more extensive training for new officials. We have made improvements, but he started us in the right direction. He was the first person from Section 5 to be elected President of our State Organization (NYSWOA) and his influence is felt to this day. He rescued the group from a small clique that controlled the state organization and laid the groundwork for the state presidency to rotate to different sections so that everyone in the state has the opportunity to be involved. Leo was inducted posthumously into the NY State Wrestling Hall of Fame and was the first person from our section to be selected. He as a great leader and mentor, so it is fitting that such a great award is named for him.

ORDIWAY MEMORIAL AWARD WINNERS
This award is named after John Ordiway, an official who was a well known sports figure in Section 5 during the 1960’s when he was head football coach at Pittsford and an outstanding wrestling official. He died of leukemia in 1968. His personality, his concern for young people and his style of officiating made him one of the most popular and respected wrestling officials in this area. The coaches and wrestlers loved to have him referee their matches and his follow officials loved working with him.
He was such an outstanding man and his officiating colleagues wanted to be sure that he would never be forgotten, so the Section 5 Wrestling Officials Association decided to present an annual award to the Outstanding Wrestler at the Section 5 State Qualifier based on performance at that tournament. Now that we have 2 divisions, 2 awards are presented based on the votes cast by the officials who referee or attend the Qualifier.
The selections are based on the votes of the members of the Wrestling Officials Association who are present at the State Qualifier.
