Select one question from each of the following sections. This is the final part of the comprehensive exam. Write a 3- to 5-page essay to address the elements of the question as outlined. Use APA format with references.

Section IV

1. How does an effective administrator bring together family and community resources to have a positive effect on student learning? What are community resources an administrator could use to support student achievement, solve problems, and meet school goals? Describe at least three ways to demonstrate active involvement in the community, including involving persons with conflicting or diverse perspectives.

2. The local media recently has reported on several disturbing issues facing youth in your diverse community. In an effort to respond meaningfully to these emerging issues affecting many of your students, you plan to contact local community organizations, religious groups, businesses, and families. Describe how you plan to collaborate with these community members and to mobilize resources to address the emerging issues affecting your students.

a. Briefly outline the issues facing diverse youth in your community as well as methods for bringing community groups, families, and school staff together to address these concerns. Include how you will capitalize on media and technology in this collaborative response to students’ needs.

b. Identify conflicting perspectives and challenges you and the school may encounter as well as conflict resolution strategies you may employ as you collaborate with organizations, businesses, groups, and individuals in the community. Explain the anticipated benefits for students, families, and community members of the collaboration.

c. Describe an action plan, including strategies for accessing resources and funds, to address issues facing your students. Describe assessment strategies and research methods for evaluating the plan’s effectiveness. Using best practices and current learning theories, describe how this action plan meets the students’ and community’s diverse needs.

1. You have heard from community members that bullying is a problem in your school. How would you address that problem? Address the following:

a. Describe how you will involve staff in confirming the problem, conducting a needs assessment, setting priorities, and considering problem-solving strategies.

b. Discuss how you will use research-based data and group process skills to build consensus among all stakeholders in addressing the problem.

c. Explain how you will communicate and collaborate with family and community in addressing the problem.

d. Discuss any legal and ethical principles that may apply to this situation.
