While this diversity promotes positive social and economic gains within host countries, the value of these gains is determined by local perceptions. Analysis (402 words)International immigrants socially enrich their host countries and communities with the wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds that they bring with them, and they may bolster the economic health of their host countries and communities as well. In terms of deeper social benefits, the presence of immigrants increases cross-cultural exposure in the communities where they reside. This exposure promotes cross-cultural understanding, communication, and respect (Brown 2009, page 213). These societal skills help community members to increase their tolerance of ambiguity and unfamiliarity (Brown 2009, page 214), both of which are critical to cooperation and peace. In terms of economic benefits, Niebuhr (2010, page 582) found that cultural and educational diversity brought by immigrants increased the regional research and development (R&D) sector within their host regions. The technological innovations driving these economic gains go on to attract greater innovation and diversity in the future, bringing secondary economic benefits as well (Niebuhr 2010, page 564). In this sense, cultural diversity may continue to expand and support the macroeconomic stability of a host country and community. When people do not view immigrants as being a threat or direct competitor for economic benefits, they tend to be more accepting of immigrants (Kauff & Wagner 2012, page 719). Despite the social and economic benefits of immigrants to a host country or community, the introduction of diversity can be seen as a threat within a host country or community that is trying to consolidate shared cultural identity (Wright 2011, page 837). Xenophobic and anti-immigrant sentiments can persuade host countries and communities to associate immigrants with negative social issues, such as increased crime rates, and negative economic issues, such as reliance on social services. Many advanced democracies are becoming increasingly diverse over time through an influx of immigrants. However, global trends since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have promoted more anti-immigration policies (Wright 2011, page 855). At the same time, countries with more pro-immigration policies tend to ascribe to nationalism and reject values of multiculturalism (Wright 2011, page 855). This mismatch of national policies and values adds complexity to addressing the question of how immigrants are perceived in their host countries and communities. This perception drives whether they are seen as positive or negative additions to their new homes. Ultimately, because pro-diversity and pro-out group beliefs are positively correlated, the more people value diversity, the less they hold discriminatory beliefs against immigrants (Kauff & Wagner 2012, page 717). Evaluation (31 words)Niebuhr (2010) only assessed the benefits of immigration in Germany. Kauff and Wagner (2012) constrained their study only to seven countries in Europe, and their data was based on self-reported beliefs.Inference (29 words)Cultural diversity at a larger scale is beneficial to society both socially and economically. However, at a local scale, it is unclear how communities perceive and value these benefits. Explanation (46 words)The benefits that immigrants bring to their host countries and communities far outweigh negative issues, which are largely based on perception and not reality. When immigrants are welcomed into societies and allowed to integrate socio-economically, they are able to enjoy and provide social and economic opportunities. References (4 from 2005-2016)Brown, L.
