The past 12 months have seen conferences shuffling, storied programs faltering, and--who would have imagined--a playoff installed. While the boys from West Point are now an afterthought, their 8-0-1 season in 1958 was the last great fall for the Cadets--and the subject of the new book When Saturday Mattered Most, by Sports Illustrated editor Mark Beech. That year, A rmy was led by Heisman-winning halfback Pete Dawkins, with Head Coach Earl "Red" Blaik manning the sidelines in his last of 18 seasons at the academy. College football may have changed forever following that season, but there are still plenty of lessons to be learned from the '58 Army squad. The End of an Era A month after Army beat Navy in `58, the Colts defeated the Giants in a game referred to as "The Greatest Game Ever Played." (See where the game ranks in our list of The Best NFL Moments Ever.) "It was watched by 45 million people, which was unheard of," says Beech. The next year the AFL had its first player draft, where crazy bidding wars started taking place. The marriage of pro football to a national television audience and big-money contracts made military academies less appealing to good college football players who wanted to be noticed. Put Education First There certainly weren't any Jimmy's Chicken Wing Bowls back in 1958. "College football was not the incredible money generator it is today," says Beech. In fact, that undefeated Army team actually gave up a Cotton Bowl game against national champion LSU that season. Army administration didn't play bowl games, as it was thought cadets should get back to academics, and Red Blaik thought a bowl game would have distracted from the importance of the clash with Navy. "The players, of course, wanted to play. They still gripe about it a little," says Beech. To put that into perspective, imagine Alabama saying, "Nope, we're good!" about a rematch with LSU last season. Kindred Spirits If you want a comparison of how good Heisman winner Dawkins was, think of legendary game-breakers like Desmond Howard. "Dawkins was a touchdown machine and could score any way," says Beech. He could run, he was a tremendous receiver who averaged over 30 yards a catch, and he even ran back punts. Meanwhile, Blaik modeled his coaching style after the leadership of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Compare him today to Chris Peterson of Boise State or former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel. "Blaik was aloof, cold, hands-off, but in control of everything that went on," says Beech. Redeem Yourself You know how USC is expected to compete for a title this year after being banned from bowls by the NCAA for the past two seasons? That was Army in `58. Under Blaik in 1951, 37 players were kicked off the team for an academic scandal. Cheating at West Point was a big deal. Play with Honor Bob Anderson--a stable mate of Dawkins in the backfield--was recruited by some of the top schools in the country. But he sensed that it was easier at the other schools. "All these players on Army wanted to go some place that was hard and gave them a challenge," says Beech. There's a legend about a sense of duty and right and wrong in West Point players to this day. The Black Knights don't boast five-star recruits anymore, but when Army meets Navy each fall, you can still sense the pride put into each snap. Depending on what's going on during the game, the 11 players may be part of the offense, part of the defense or part of special teams. The offensive players attempt to score points for the team. The defensive players attempt to block the other team from scoring. Special teams comes out for field goals, punts and punt returns. Too Many Men on the Field Penalty If a team has too many men on the field, they'll receive a penalty. This penalty can happen if a team is pulling one player out and putting another in, but the player coming out of the game doesn't get off the field before the snap. It can also happen if more than 11 players join a huddle or extra players line up for play formation. How Many Players on a College Football Team? College football teams have a little more freedom when it comes to adding players to their teams. NCAA schools have a limit of 125 active players at any given time. That said, most teams have about 60 to 70 players with many others, especially freshmen and sophomores, working to make the team in the years to come. How Many Players on the Field During College Play? Like the NFL, only 11 players can be on the field during gameplay.
