A strong panel of twenty three left the college as underdogs as they were up against an impressive DCU team in good form. However, somebody forgot read the script to the DkIT men as they took to the field pride, passion and commitment; characteristics shown by all of our football teams in recent weeks. DkIT set the pace of the game from early on with points from Sean Mcloughlin and Niall Greenan. As DCU tried to get a foothold in the game they were repeatedly frustrated by a strong DkIT defence were giving nothing away without a fight. As the teams exchanged points it was evident that both teams were there to win with a tremendous effort being displayed by both sides. Scores from Greg Fahy and Philip Coogan helped to maintain our early lead. The key score arrived fifteen minutes into the first half with DkIT breaking through the opposition defence and centre back Sean Buckley blasted the ball to the back of the net giving the DCU goal keeper no chance of stopping the shot. A further point from Sean McLoughlin helped DkIT to a three point lead at half time. DkIT 1-05 DCU 0-05.The second half saw DkIT playing into a strong wind which made it harder for our men to create scoring chances. They battled hard however the DCU started the half at a high pace with some creative attacking play. DCU managed to take control of the game as fired some excellent long range shots over the bar despite the brave efforts of the DkIT defence. For all of DCU’s good play they were by no means comfortable as DkIT continued to ask questions of their defence. Points from Glen Fitzpatrick and Sean McGawley meant there was only two points between the sides coming into the closing stages of the game. At this point both teams were pushing hard for the decisive score and to DkIT’s misfortune it fell to the opposition. It was all or nothing for DkIT and as we were looking for a goal DCU caught our men on the break. Our defence was stretched and DCU managed to score a sloppy goal to put the tie beyond our men. Taking out the end result of the game the day proved very positive as DkIT showed great heart and terrific play at times. We are continually improving and building well for the championship. Well done and keep up the great work lads.Key players: Sean McLoughlin, Niall Greenan and Sean Buckley D. McKenny, A. Smith, P. Garland, A. Courtney, N. Greenan, S. Buckley, N. Adair, G.
