2009 Head Football Coach Candidate Questionnaire

Candidate: Tyler Mazzocco

Circle the Level and Division applying for:

Jr Mity-Mite Mity-Mite Jr Pee Wee Pee Wee Jr Midget Midget

Division 1 Division 2

1. What qualities do you possess that make you a good leader?

Good leaders are role models, good listeners, and lead by example, just to name a few. I believe I possess these qualities. I played quarterback every year I played football. I felt one of my best qualities was being a leader. I wanted my team to know to be successful everyone had an important role in practice and in games. All you can ask from players is to give it their best. It is the coach’s job to do the rest. Players play hard for coaches who work hard for them. My coaching style is not a yeller and screamer. I coach through positive reinforcement .

2. What is the most important goal you set for the season?

The most important goal at this age is for the kids to have fun and want to come back next season to play. It is also important for these players to learn the game of football and get better everyday. Winning is always the ultimate goal in sports, but at this level the things I mentioned above are more important.

3. Number of years as a D1 Pop-Warner football head coach, level:

0

4. Number of years as a D2 Pop-Warner football head coach, level:

0

5. Number of years as a Pop-Warner football Offensive or Defensive coordinator, level: 0

6. Number of years as an assistant Pop-Warner football coach, level: 2 or 3 years, I believe it was the pee wee level

7. Other head coach experience:

I have coached soccer, baseball, and basketball

8. Describe your personnel football knowledge base:

I started playing Pop Warner Football at the age of 8. When I moved to Carlsbad at age 10 I played for Carlsbad Pop Warner. I played football through my Senior Year at Carlsbad High School. I also help coach Carlsbad Pop Warner football teams while in high school and the first years of college. I am currently working at Carlsbad High School as the School Resource officer and coached on the freshman football team assisting Greg Lundquist. Greg was my coach during my years playing football in Carlsbad. Everyone who is involved in football in Carlsbad should know Greg. Greg is a great coach and who I have learned a lot of all my football knowledge from. I am also very close to the Varsity coaching staff at Carlsbad and talk to them about football.

9. How do plan to select your coaching staff?

I have some friends I know who are going to have players on the Jr Mighty Might team who have coaching experience at the Pop Warner and high school level. I have talked with them and they are interested in coaching. I would also hold a parent meeting asking if any parents would like to help coach. From there I would discuss with them their experience in football and how they would best contribute to the team. I would also try and have some of the players past and present from Carlsbad High come help out. A successful team has a good coaching staff.

10. Describe your practice plan and game preparation:

Well I believe it is important to have a plan. At this age the players need to be constantly moving. Practices would be set up with drills to teach them the game and getting them better everyday. Practices would include running drills, tackling drills, technique drills etc. We would have offensive time and defensive time during practice. A lot of football is repetitive and learning your position and your responsibilities for that position. Game preparation at this age is making sure the players have practiced all week on what we plan on doing during the games. At this age there are probably not going to be a whole lot of plays to run on offense and defense, however, we need to make sure the plays we do have the players execute them to the best of there ability. I know I keep saying at this age, but that doesn’t mean we don’t push the players to learn or do more. The team will dictate where we can go during the season.

11. If you are one of the lucky teams to get the cheerleaders, how will you support them?

Cheerleaders are a very important part of any football team. They get the crowd excited and in return get the team excited. The cheer team would be welcomed at any of the team events whether or not that is after game get togethers or the season ending party. I would be in contact with the cheer coach so we can work together as a team. I would want the cheer team to feel they are a very important part of the Pop Warner program.
