Lesson Plan: Old Testament Session 3 Class #3

Class: 2nd & 3rd Grade

Title/Subject: Balaam Blesses Israel

Key Scripture: Numbers 22

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall facts from the previous lessons (Moses Disobeys; The Brazen Serpent).

2. Locate places mentioned in the story text on a given map.

3. Recall story facts and retell the story of Balak and Balaam.

4. Tell where on the Bible time line this story fits.

5. Discuss the problems encountered in the story when Balaam wanted King Balak’s plan more than God’s plan. Discuss how his desire for riches caused him to make choices which were not part of God’s plan. Discuss how the love of riches or other material things can keep us from wanting God’s plan more than our own.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Before class have students complete the review sheets for the previous lesson. (The Brazen Serpent crossword and multiple choice) - attached

2. Sing a few songs and go to God in prayer.

3. Review the previous lesson by checking the review sheets.

4. Read the story from the NIV Daily Chronological Bible. Use the Abeka cards for illustrations. Complete the worksheets from the “Our Spiritual Heritage.” (attached)

5. Use a map to show all the regions mentioned in the story as they are presented. Students will label their own map as each place is presented while telling the story.

Out-of-Class:

2. Work on memory verses and other memory work

Lesson Plan: Old Testament Session 3 Class #4 (no lessons 1-2)

Class: 2nd and 3rd grade

Title/Subject: How Moses Left His People

Key Scripture: Numbers 27:12-23

Deuteronomy 34

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall important facts from previous lessons.

2. Locate and label places on a map of the Old Testament.

Locations will include bodies of water and locations of important events which have been studied so far in the Old Testament.

3. Discuss the following important points while the story is being told.

A. The Israelites were camped just across the Jordan River from the Promised Land (Canaan).

B. Moses was a great leader and trusted the Lord. Review Moses’ speeches to the Israelites before he died.

C. Moses’ disobedience caused him not to enter the Canaan.

D. Joshua was chosen by God as the new leader for Israel. (Read this from the bible text.)

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer and a few songs.

2. Review the last lesson. Use the attached worksheets.

3. Review the map of Canaan. Locate and label the places shown on the attached map. Color the maps, if time permits. Students should study the map for a future quiz.

4. Discuss the content of Moses’ last words to the Israelites before he dies. Use the chronological bilbe for March 8-9. Tell the story of Moses’ death using the same text.

Read the account when Joshua was chosen as the new leader from Numbers 27 before reading the account from Deut. 34. Use the Abeka cards to illustrate the story.

Discuss the points listed above while telling the story.

Class: 2nd and 3rd grade

Title/Subject: Rahab Helps the Spies / Crossing the Jordan

Key Scripture: Joshua 2-4

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall important facts from previous lessons.

2. Locate and label places on a map of the Old Testament.

Locations will include bodies of water and locations of important events which have been studied so far in the Old Testament. (See attached map)

3. Recall story facts from today’s lesson.

4. Retell the story of Rahab and the crossing of the Jordan.

5. Discuss the following:

A. The word of God is powerful and God uses His people to spread His word. (Rahab had heard about the miracles of God).

B. God provides a way to save those who believe in Him and obey Him.

C. God has power over the laws of nature.

D. How the setting up of stones and the Lord’s Supper are both memorials.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer and a few songs.

2. Review the last lesson. Use the attached worksheets as pre-class activities.

3. Review the map of Canaan. Locate and label the places shown on the attached map. Students should study the map for a future quiz.

4. Tell the story of Rahab using the A Beka cards and the chronological bible. Sing:” I’m Not Ashamed to Own My Lord.”

5. Using material from the “Our Spiritual Heritage” series, tell the story of crossing the Jordan and complete the activities. (See attached material) Sing: “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand”

Title/Subject: Capturing Jericho

Key Scripture: Joshua 5-6

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall important facts from previous lessons.

2. Locate and label places on a map of Canaan, including Gilgal, Jericho and Ai.

3. Recall story facts from today’s lesson.

4. Retell the story of how Jericho was captured.

5. State the importance of following God’s plan exactly.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer.

2. Review the story of Rahab and the crossing of the Jordan.

3. Sing “I’m Not Ashamed to Own My Lord” and “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand.”

4. Go over the map given before class. (Attached) Students should study the map for a future quiz.

5. Tell the story of the capture of Jericho using the A beka cards and the chronological bible.

6. Discuss the following while telling the story:

A. How the Israelites must have felt to finally be in the Promised Land.

B. The camp at Gilgal and the observance of the Passover while there. Note that the manna ceased in Gilgal and tell why.

C. Jericho ordinarily would have been a very hard city to capture. Discuss how man’s plan would have been very different from God’s.

D. Joshua was willing to follow God’s plan exactly in order to gain the victory.

E. Note that Rahab and her family were saved just as was promised. Her faith saved her.

7. Complete the attached worksheets from the “Our Spiritual Heritage” series.

Title/Subject: How Sin Lost A Battle / Joshua Teaches God’s Law

Key Scripture: Joshua 7-8

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall important facts from previous lessons.

2. Locate and label places on a map of Canaan, including Gilgal, Jericho, Ai and Mt. Ebal.

3. Recall story facts from today’s lesson.

4. Retell the story of Achan’s sin, the defeat at Ai, and the eventual conquest of Ai.

5. State the importance of following God’s plan exactly.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer.

2. Review the story of the battle at Jericho. Use the worksheet provided and the Children’s Bible Weekly.(available in the resource room)

3. Sing “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah,” “To God Be The Glory.”

4. Go over the map of Cannan using the overhead. Students should label the blank map as shown.

5. Tell the story of the Achan’s Sin and the capture of Ai by reading from the Children’s Bible Weekly together aloud. The A Beka cards may also be used. Read the story of Joshua reading the law from the lesson book. (Walking With God #10) Go over the answers to the questions in the workbook.

6. Discuss the following while telling the story:

A. The consequences of sin and how one sin can affect the lives of many.

B. Achan could not hide from God and was punished for his disobedience. C. Achan loved riches more than God. His whole family suffered because of it and the whole nation of Israel suffered for it.

D. God’s plans must be followed exactly.

E. The Israelites were still at Gilgal and had captured two important cities. The way was open for them to go further into Canaan.

F. They had been told by Moses to have this worship service when the law was read. The law needed to be taught to them again.

G. Compare their worship with our worship today.

7. Complete the activities from “Our Spiritual Heritage.”

Class: 2nd and 3rd grade

Title/Subject: The Gibeonites Tricked Joshua

Key Scripture: Joshua 9

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall important facts from previous lessons.

2. Locate and label places on a map of Canaan, including Gilgal, Jericho, Ai and Gibeon.

3. Recall story facts from today’s lesson.

4. Retell the story of how Joshua was tricked by the Gibeonites.

5. State that we must pray and seek God’s wisdom when making a decision.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer.

2. Review the story of Achan and the story of Joshua reading the law.

3. Sing “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah,” “To God Be The Glory,” and a few student choices.

4. Go over the map of Canaan using the overhead. Students should add Gibeon to the map from the last lesson.

5. Tell the story by first asking the children to retell it in their own words. Show them pictures using the A Beka cards. Choose a student for each picture, have them stand in front of the class and tell the story. Fill in any details they may leave out by reading from the chronological bible.

6. Discuss the following:

A. The importance of praying and seeking God’s wisdom when making decisions.

B. People who do not follow God will go to extremes to deceive others.

C. Why the “strangers” came to Joshua.

D. The mistake Johhua made by not asking God what He wanted.

E. Mention that the Gibeonites were punished for their deception.

F. Stress that Joshua kept his promise to the people of Gideon.

7. Role play the story.

Class: 2nd and 3rd grade

Title/Subject: The Land of Israel

Key Scripture: Joshua 11-24

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall important facts from previous lessons.

2. Locate and label on a map of Canaan the division of the land.

3. Write the names of the 12 tribes.

4. Recall story facts from today’s lesson.

5. State that the division of the land by Joshua fulfils the land promise that God gave to Abraham.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer.

2. As children enter, provide them with a map that shows the division of the land. Students will color the map using different colors for each tribe.

3. Use the text and pictures from the Children’s Bible Weekly to review the previous lesson.

4. Use the classroom map to point out the divided land for each tribe and discuss how each division was determined. Discuss this as the account is read from the Children’s Bible Weekly.

5. Read and discuss Joshua’s last days from the same book.

6. Emphasize the following points during the lesson:

A. Fame of the Israelites.

B. Joshua was now old and had remained faithful to God all of his life.

C. Discuss in detail the dividing of the land, explaining the tribes that remained on the east of the Jordan.

D. Each tribe was responsible for ridding the land of anyone that remained.

E. Caleb also led a long, faithful life and was rewarded with his own land.

F. The land promise has now been fulfilled.

G. The importance of Joshua’s farewell speech.

Key Scripture: Chapters 1-13 Walking With God Year 1 Book 4

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Recall important facts from previous lessons.

2. Locate and label places on a map.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer.

2. Check review pages provided for homework and review sheet provided before class, including a map review.

3. Using the large floor map, review all the places that we have located in previous lessons. When children are given a label or a colored chip, they should be able to locate the places as directed by the teacher.

4. Play a game as determined by the teacher to ask review questions from previous 13 lessons. Include questions about

the time line and the books of the Bible and their divisions.

5. Sing songs if time permits.

Out-of-Class:

1. Prepare Review pages provided by the teacher for homework. 2. Review all questions at the end of each chapter in the workbook.

Title/Subject: A New Leader For Israel(Lesson 1)

A Judge Who Was Left-Handed Lesson2)

Key Scripture: Judges 1-3

Specific Class Objectives:

By the end of class, student will -

1. Realize that God punished the Israelites because He loved them. Parents also punish children because they love and care for them.

2. Recall important facts from the lesson.

3. Tell why God sent judges for Israel.

4. Explain the cycle of the Judges.

5. Name the first three judges.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer.

2. Provide the crossword puzzle review for today’s lesson as students arrive.(attached)

3. Discuss “Approach to the Lesson” found in the teacher’s manual for lesson , p.56.(Walking With God Year 1, Book 4)

4. Discuss briefly the state of the Israelites when Joshua died up until the time of the judges. Using the A Beka cards and text, discuss the cycle of the judges. Use the wall diagram along

with the cards to talk about it.

5. Tell the story of Othneil, Ehud, and Shamgar using the A Beka cards and text.

6. Complete the review sheets for the lesson as well as go over the questions in the student books.

7. Sing songs if time permits.

8. Points to emphasize and discuss:

• Think About This - lesson book page 3

• The Israelites turned to worshiping idols because those around them were doing so. We must never do things that are wrong just because others are.

• While the Israelites obeyed God, they had peace and rest. As soon as they began to forget God, trouble came.

• The Israelites made the same mistake over and over.

Whenever they repented, God forgave them and delivered them because He is such a loving God and wants what’s best for His children. We should learn from our mistakes, but realize God’s mercy and love for us when we do make mistakes.

1. Prepare lesson 1 and 2 in Walking With God, Year 1, book 4 (green).

2. Distinguish the acceptable and unacceptable

behavior of the Israelites.

3. Explain the cycle of the Judges.

5. Name the first four judges.

6. Discuss ways that Deborah served God.

Activities:

In-class:

1. Open with a prayer and a few songs.

2. Provide a review worksheet for the students as they arrive.

Check the worksheet and discuss the previous lesson.

3. Discuss the cycle of the judges and make a judges wheel

using the materials provided by the teacher. (See sample)

4. Tell the story of Deborah and Barak using the A Beka cards

and the text from the book of Judges.

5. While telling the story, discuss important facts. (Ex. Why did

Barak refuse to go fight unless Deborah went along?) 6. Work on new songs, memory work, etc. as time permits.
