TIER I (School Pop. 1250+)

Northern Semi-Finals

#2 Salisbury Sabres vs. #4 Harry Ainlay Titans

Fri., Nov. 8 – 7:30 p.m., Commonwealth Stadium (Edmonton)

If anything, these two teams have provided us with the most interesting regular season games in the past two years. From the “Brawl in the Blizzard” in 2018 (won by the Titans) to this year’s “Faux Field Goal” game, these two are must see for any high school football fans. Despite the rankings there hasn’t been anything to separate the Titans and Sabres this year with the aforementioned “Faux Field Goal” game in which a Salisbury field goal attempt late in the game to take the lead was ruled wide right at the same time a whistle blew. The resolution was the awarding of a single point to the Sabres and the game finished in an 11-11 tie. Even with the tie breaker system used to determine first place it was won by the Sabres by a single point. Last year in this game the Titans won 25-7. This year….at least there will be overtime if the tie happens again.

Fort McMurray Saints at #9 Grande Prairie Warriors

Sat. Nov. 9 - 2:30 p.m., CKC Field (Grande Prairie)

With Lindsay Thurber from Red Deer pulling out of Provincials last week the play in game that the Saints were scheduled for on Nov. 2 became unnecessary and they cross Northern Alberta for a date with the Warriors. Fort McMurray is a combination of the Catholic schools in town and have been barn storming across the Province looking for games all year in preparation for this game. There results have been mixed but they stand a puncher chance for being an unknown quantity. The Warriors on the other hand have put together a decent showing this year in the Mighty Peace qualifying for the Peace Bowl.

                                                        Southern Semi-Finals

#1 St. Francis Browns vs. #3 Notre Dame Pride

Sat. Nov. 9 – 7:00 p.m., McMahon Stadium (Calgary)

Once again, the spectre of large crowds has moved this game originally scheduled for Hellard Field at Shouldice Park to the Big House on Crowchild Trail. The games these two put out are always a guarantee to be close and dramatic. Last season the Pride beat the Browns in the regular season 14 - 10 only to see the Brown take the rematch in the Southern Alberta Tier I Final 22-14. This year’s regular season contest was a tight single digit affair until late in the 4 quarter when the Browns pushed a couple of TD’s across to win 20-2. The game also doubles as the Calgary Division I Championship and neither program is a stranger here as you can count on one hand the number of times either of these teams did not win the Calgary Div. I Title in this century.

#10 Foothills Falcons at #6 L.C.I. Rams

Sat. Nov. 9 – 2:30 p.m., University of Lethbridge Community Stadium (Lethbridge)

Who knew that a game on August 30 would be a preview to a Provincial game? On that night in a game held in the same stadium as this Saturday’s game, the Rams easily handled the Falcons 30-6. A lot has happened in the 66 days since then as Foothills population swelled to over the 1250 mark pushing them to the Tier I level and thus filling out the bracket for the first time with a Tier I team from Region 2. A tough exhibition season and a couple of losses to their cross city rival, Holy Trinity Academy, have left Foothills with an uncharacteristic .500 record but they are always dangerous in November. The Rams, on the other hand, have only lost to Henry Wise Wood and Raymond in the regular season (a loss they avenged in the Tier I qualifier last Wednesday with a 13-8 win over the Comets). With the Alberta Bowl in Raymond this year the Rams would dearly love to be the “home” team on their rivals turf in three weeks so the quest begins here on Saturday.

TIER II (School Pop. 750-1249)

Northern Semi-Finals

#3 Austin O’Brien Crusaders at #5 St. Josephs Celtics

Sat. Nov. 9 – 12:00 p.m., CKC Field (Grande Prairie)

Not much history here between these two teams, which is surprizing since both of these teams have qualified in the northern draw of Tier II Provincials consistently since 2010. The only times they met though were in 2012 (a 22-2 win for AOB) and 2016 (a 13-7 win for St. Joes) but both were constant participants in the Alberta Bowl over that time with the Crusaders representing the North from 2011-2013 (winning all three) and the Celtics in 2010 and from 2014 -2016 (winning once). The Celtics were supposed to be in a bit of a rebuilding year but the young players have exceeded expectations and delivered another Peace Bowl title to their trophy room. As for the Crusaders, they are famous for lying in the weeds playing a tough schedule in Metro Edmonton Division I against nothing but Tier I teams then springing into Provincials. Last year was no exception as they took the eventual Provincial Champion Lloydminster Barons to the limit in the North Semi with only a last second FG that hit the post leaving them with an 18-17 loss. Of their four losses, three of them have come at the hands of Salisbury and Harry Ainlay. Two historically great programs collide in Grande Prairie this Saturday.

Contacts: St. Josephs – Trevor Prichard (780)532-7779(B) Austin O’Brien – Darcy Ogonoski (780)466-3161(B

#7 Paul Kane Blues at #4 Lloydminster Barons

Sat. Nov. 9 – 3:00 p.m., Armstrong Field (Lloydminster)

An up and down year for the defending Provincial Tier II Champion Barons as they entered the year ranked #1 but dropped a couple of games early before going on a six-game win streak and capturing the Wheatland Championship game last week. Finishing up in the title game has become habit for them over the past two seasons and they’re definitely hoping for a third. Coming at them is the talented Blues. Undefeated in Division II in Metro Edmonton they are getting better with every game and will be a stiff test for the defending champs. The Blues had their string of qualifying for Provincials every year since 2013 snapped last year and even then have previously struggled to get past the Northern Semi winning only once in 2013. This year they might have the horses to get into the second round and beyond.

Southern Semi-Finals

#9 Bert Church Chargers at #6 Hunting Hills Lightning

Sat. Nov. 9 – 1:00 p.m., Great Chief Park (Red Deer)

A traditional participant vs. an up and coming program. The Lightning are the standard setters in Central Alberta having won the City Division Title for an unprecedented 8 times in the past 10 years. With that comes a four-game winning streak in the South Semi Finals, however that’s where it has ended for them as they have also dropped the last four Tier II South Final in a row as well. As for the Chargers, they are the mystery team this year. Putting together a solid season their only losses have come at the hands of the eternal powerhouse in the Rockyview League – the Cochrane Cobras, and even though they’ve won a few by the skin of their teeth, they undefeated otherwise. Its been a long time since the Chargers darkened the door of Provincials (we’re talking 1997) so it will be one to watch whether experience or the new kids on the block will take the game on Saturday.

Contacts: Hunting Hills – Kyle Sedgwick (403)342-7799(B)  Bert Church – Steven Larsen (403)401-1521(B)

#2 Cardston Cougars at #1 Holy Trinity Academy Knights

Sat. Nov. 9 – 1:00 p.m., Knights Field at HTA (Okotoks)

If you paid attention to the Tier II rankings as the season wore on, you probably didn’t have this match-up in mind for the first round of Provincials. To save all the questions the Provincial Draw is predetermined in June and the first round match-ups are based on proximity – not rankings. This is why you get two powerful teams facing off in the first round. Not much to choose between these two teams. Both are technically undefeated at the Tier II level where HTA has ran the board and Cardston’s two losses have come vs. Tier I Raymond and LCI. The Knights were last years Southern rep in the Alberta Bowl and the Tier II level dropping a tough one to Lloydminster and would dearly love another shot. The Cougars haven’t played at this level in a while as they have a much smaller student population than required. However, they used to be the kings of Tier II with four in a row Provincial Championships in the 1990’s so they are looking to beginning a new trend.

TIER III (School Pop. 450-749)

Northern Semi-Finals

#3 Sturgeon Spirits at #6 Whitecourt Cats

Sat. Nov. 9 - 1:00 p.m., Graham Acres Athletic Park (Whitecourt)

It’s been nine years since the Metro Edmonton has sent a team other than the St. Albert Skyhawks to Tier III Provincials and its now a team that didn’t exist until 2018 that will carry the torch this year. The Sturgeon Sprits were founded last season and acquitted themselves quite nicely in Metro Edmonton Division III getting to the final game. This year they moved up to Division II which made them eligible for a Provincial berth should they finish ahead of St. Albert, which happened in the course of the playoffs. A loss in the semi-finals have had them cooling their heels for a week and a half now so we’ll see if that affects them on Saturday. As for the hometown Cats, the team with the longest regular season travel schedule in Alberta, they continue to put out quality teams and are looking to have another run like they did in 2014 when the streaked all the way to the Alberta Bowl only to be stopped by the perennial champion Cochrane Cobras.

Contacts: Whitecourt – Kevin Babiuk (780)778-2446(B) Sturgeon – Chad Hill (780)973-3301(B)

#2 Sylvan Lake Lakers at #4 Holy Rosary Raiders

Fri. Nov. 8 – 5:00 p.m., Holy Rosary High School (Lloydminster)

These two programs know each other very well having played in this game in 2015, 2016 and 2018, all wins for the Raiders, and both have a long history of Provincial experience. It’s been smooth sailing for the Lakers this year as they have yet to lose a game and won the Central Alberta Rural Division with little struggle. The same can’t be said for the Raiders who blasted out of the gates but sputtered at the end with a loss to their crosstown rival Lloydminster in hurricane like conditions on Oct. 26 in the Wheatland Championship Game. Still, they are resilient if nothing else and are always a factor in Provincials having gone to the Alberta Bowl from the north for the past four seasons and it wouldn’t be a surprize to see them there again. This is must see in Lloydminster this weekend.

Southern Semi-Finals

#1 Cochrane Cobras at #10 Winston Churchill Bulldogs

Fri. Nov. 8 – 5:00 p.m., University of Lethbridge Community Stadium (Lethbridge)

The consistence of the Cochrane Cobras is a wonder to behold and sometimes taken for granted. 29 straight years advancing to Provincials, 40 straight wins in a row (that was set last season), and winners of 12 of the last 17 Tier III Provincial Championships (including the last five in a row and the only program ever to accomplish that at any Tier). Pretty heady stuff. Still, their opponent in this game is no slouch and is well schooled this season having to face a murderers row of opposition in the Southern Alberta League, most of it from teams at a higher Tier like Raymond, L.C.I, Cardston and Catholic Central.

Contacts: Cochrane – Rob McNab (403)932-2542(B) Winston Churchill – Jon Dick – (403)328-4723

W.H. Croxford Cavaliers at #5 Crescent Heights Vikings

Sat., Nov. 9 – 2:30 p.m., Methanex Bowl (Medicine Hat)

With Rundle College pulling out of their spot as the rep from the Big Rock League, the unranked Cavaliers have gamely jumped into the fray. A big year for Airdrie as with the Cavaliers addition to Bert Church it’s the first time in that City’s history that they have placed two schools in Provincials in the same year. Waiting for them are the strong Vikings who have been in this spot before qualifying for Provincials from 2011-2015 in this past decade but its been a couple of seasons since they made the Big Dance so they’re anxious to get things rolling.

TIER IV (School Pop. 449 or less)

Northern Semi-Finals

#5 Sexsmith Sabres at #6 St. Paul Lions

Sat. Nov. 10 – 1:00 p.m., Lions Field (St. Paul)

Possibly the farthest anyone has to travel this weekend. Clear across the Province from the far west to far east go the Sabres who are one of the most consistent Provincial qualifiers in any Tier. Despite having qualified for Provincials at the Tier IV level for 16 consecutive seasons, Sexsmith has not hit pay dirt since the creation of the Tier IV level of play in 1999 but are hoping this might be the year having recorded a solid season in the Mighty Peace league. On the flip side of this match-up are the Lions who are the Provincial Tier IV runners-up last season with their own magical run through Provincials to the Alberta Bowl. Don’t let the under .500 record fool you. These Lions can play, just as the Sabres found out last year with a 39-13 St. Paul win in this game.

Contacts:  Sexsmith – James Watson (780)568-3642 (B)     St. Paul – Mark Tichkowsky (780)645-4491(B)

#4 Ardrossan Bisons at #3 Stettler Wildcats

Sat. Nov. 9 – 1:30 p.m., MEGlobal Athletic Park (Lacombe)

Truly a shame this game has to happen so quickly but again, first round match-ups are set by proximity, not overall record or ranking. The Bisons ever-fluctuating school population moved them to Tier III two years ago but they’re back in their favourite hunting grounds for the second straight year where they have won more Provincial titles than anyone else at the Tier IV level. Facing them is a team went to the Central Alberta Rural Division Championship and is always on the hunt themselves in Tier IV. Might be the game of the week in all Tier’s in round one.

Contacts:  Ardrossan – Paul Schwartz (780)922-2228(B) Stettler – Norbert Baharally (403)742-3466(H)

Southern Semi-Finals

#9 W.R. Myers Rebels at #2 Drumheller Titans

Sat. Nov. 9 – 1:00 p.m., Drumheller High School (Drumheller)

Undefeated and flying high the Titans are looking to return to their glory years of three straight Tier IV titles from 2011-13. Facing them this weekend is a familiar opponent and one that ended their season in this game last year in a squeaker as the W.R Myers Rebels beat them in Taber 16-13. The Rebels were the undefeated team last year and came crashing down a week later with a 21-20 loss to the eventual champions from Canmore. Their return to avenge that loss has been a struggle as they currently have a losing record but that hasn’t stopped teams before from turning it on in Tier IV Provincials. Should be interesting in the Valley of the Dinosaurs this Saturday.

Contacts:  W.R. Myers – Jason Jensen (403)223-2292(C)       Drumheller – Ken Fornier (403)436-0030(B)

#8 Canmore Wolverines at #1 Willow Creek Cobras

Sat. Nov. 9 – 1:00 p.m., Cobra Field (Claresholm)

This game has been the springboard to Provincial glory over the past two seasons as the winner has gone on to win the Tier IV Provincial Championship. Last year’s Wolverines were a team of destiny seemingly coming out of nowhere to defeat higher ranked opponent all the way to the big game where they dispatched the St. Paul Lions 24-10. Their run included this game where they hosted in the mountains as Canmore defeated Willow Creek 30-13. This year it will be on the prairie in Claresholm. Will it be a repeat performance or will the hometown Cobras start another run.

Contacts: Willow Creek – Tim Bryson (403)625-3387(B) Canmore – Spencer Rose (403)688-8858(B)

6-MAN

Quarter-Finals

#8 St. Joseph’s Crusaders at #1 J.C. Charyk Hawks

Sat. Nov. 9, 1:00 p.m., J.C. Charyk High School (Hanna)

Ok, some explanation is necessary. St. Joseph’s was “ranked” #5 going into Provincials but are “seeded” #8 due to a lot of factors. In any event it will be a tougher than usual opening game for the #1 seeded and defending Provincial Champion J.C. Charyk Hawks. The high flyers from Hanna have been on a roll that extends back over a season to October 5, 2018 which was the last time they lost a game, coincidentally to these same Crusaders.

Contacts: J.C. Charyk – Cam McKeage (403)854-3642(B) St. Joseph’s – Joe Willemsen (403)362-5989(B)

#5 Millwoods Christian Royals at #4 Assumption Crusaders

Friday. Nov. 8 - 5:00 p.m., Cold Lake Energy Centre (Cold Lake)

Since their inception the Crusaders of Cold Lake have never hosted a Provincial Game. In fact, they have only qualified for the past two years and lost both times after long trips to Southern Alberta. This year, safely at home they face a team that has qualified for Provincials every season since 6-Man’s inclusion - the Millwoods Christian Royals. The Royals have had an uncharacteristic rough ride this year and finished the year out of the rankings. Anyone’s game this Saturday on the new artificial turf in Cold Lake.

Contacts: Assumption – Shayne Milford (780)594-4050 Millwoods – Rob Harrod (780)462-2627(B)

#7 Provost Panthers at. #2 Breton Cougars

Sat. Nov. 9 - 12:00 p.m., MEGlobal Athletic Park (Lacombe)

It’s been since 2014 for the Panthers since they’ve made it to these heights. That’s the good news. The bad news for them is that they’re facing a traditional power at the 6-Man level in the Breton Cougars. Meeting on neutral ground in Lacombe on a fast track of MEGlobal’s artificial turf might help the Panthers, but the Cougars have a strong history in this game qualifying for the last four and winning the last two quarterfinals they were a part of.

Contacts: Breton – Corey Colwell (780)696-3633 Provost – Martin Biro (306)873-7831(C)

#6 Holy Redeemer Rebels at #3 Rimbey Spartans

Fri. Nov. 8 - 5:00 p.m., MEGlobal Athletic Park (Lacombe)

A long trip for the 6-Man Division II Champion to take on the Spartans in Lacombe. Rimbey is nothing to be trifled with in Provincials as they have qualified for this level of play each year since 6-Man entered Provincials in 2011 and won their first round game every year but last year and are this level of plays only back to back champions in 2013-2014. A big task for the Rebels for sure but they’ve won a lot of games this year so it will definitely be interesting on Friday night.
