Jenn's skin care business story.docx

Natural, preservative-free skincare.About 6 years ago I was looking for another option for giving people Christmas gifts.I was tired of giving the same old gift cards……and the same bottles of wine.So I started doing some research on skin care products to see if I could make anything nice for a gift.Well the more research I did the more I was astounded to discover that I could make high-quality products without using any chemicals or preservatives, very easily and at a low-cost. Natural, preservative-free skincare. It was actually cheaper to make higher quality products at home than to buy them at the store! The main reason being is that with commercial products, often the packaging is more expensive than the actual product. So that year I made the Christmas gifts, and I also made some products for a fundraiser we were having here at Seneca. Well, little did I know what would happen. I started getting calls and emails from people who wanted more product. They wanted to know if I sold it and could they buy some ASAP!People were telling me it helped their eczema, psoriasis, and sensitive skin issues. I was so happy that something so simple was having such a positive impact on my friends’ and family’s lives! So I decided to start a company called Jenn’s All Natural Skin Care with a goal of natural, preservative-free skincare.I built a website, created an online ordering form and started to receive orders. And then more orders. And then MORE orders!I couldn’t keep up. Remember I have a career already as an academic librarian, something that keeps me very, very busy already. It got to the point where I had no free time, I couldn’t keep up with orders and I thought I was going to go crazy. So now, here I am, looking to strategically grow my business. I need to hire staff to keep up with the orders coming in, as well as focus on creating a more robust e-commerce site and marketing plan.I need your help to make natural, preservative-free skincare a reality. The ending for the live storytelling (don’t use in the pitch demo)I couldn’t keep up. Remember I have a career already as an academic librarian, something that keeps me very, very busy already. It got to the point where I had no free time, I couldn’t keep up with orders and I thought I was going to go crazy. So I quit.Unfortunately, it was too much and I wanted to focus on my first-love, librarianship. But the story doesn’t end there…About a year after I shut down my business I met a woman at a yoga retreat who does consulting in the human services field. She asked if I would be interested in holding workshops for making skin care products for women’s shelters and re-employment programs. She thought that other women could benefit from my business idea.I was excited! All my research and development wouldn’t go to waste! I could share this excellent business idea with women that were struggling to make an income. So I started to do volunteer workshops in various communities in Ontario. I’ve been to Sudbury, Chatham, Mississauga and more. Not exactly the life of a celebrity but it’s been so rewarding in so many ways. And just recently this same woman I met at the yoga retreat opened up a DIY workshop in Richmond Hill and has asked me to deliver regular DIY skincare product workshops, AND NOW...she wants to pay me.So my entrepreneur experience may not have turned out exactly the way I thought it would, but it has become exactly what I needed. ................
