Body lotion:1 cup oil (coconut, sunflower or grapeseed)enough beeswax in the oil to bring it to 1? cups ? cup water? teaspoon borax any additional ingredients and essential oils The ProcessPlace your oils and wax in a heat proof container. I use a glass measuring cup that can handle high heat. Microwave on high for a minute, then check. You’ll probably need 3 minutes. Alternatively, you can place a stainless steel bowl over a pot of boiling water for a makeshift double boiler, melting your oils and waxes in it. Either way, the mixture needs to get very hot, almost to boiling. If any wax remains unmelted, you can stir it and it will melt. Add any butters, like shea butter, to the hot oil and continue to melt.In another container, heat the water to boiling. Add the borax and stir. This mixture needs to be kept very hot as well. Use a towel or oven mitt when handling. When you have both mixtures hot and melted, slowly pour a small amount of the water into the oil. Be careful as this can bubble and come to the top. Keep stirring in the water until it’s all incorporated. It should turn to a creamy consistency. If it doesn’t, or if it separates, don’t panic. It just means that one or the other wasn’t hot enough. Keep stirring for a few minutes and then use my soap making trick – an immersion blender. It’s the only way to get it creamy if it separates or is too cool. Blend for about 5 minutes, possibly less. You’ll notice it begin to thicken up and turn creamy. If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can use a whisk or a hand blender, but be aware that they could add extra air. When it’s blended and creamy, add a few drops of your essential oil. Stir and sniff. Add more if desired. Then transfer to clean containers. Face cream: Ingredients? cup almond oil2 tablespoons coconut oil2 tablespoons beeswax? teaspoon vitamin E oil1 tablespoon shea butterEssential oils of choice (optional)DirectionsPlace all ingredients in a glass jar. Bring a pot filled about 3-4 inches with water to a simmer. Put the jar, without its lid, in the pot, and let it sit there until the ingredients have melted. Stir occasionally. Once the mixture has melted and all is evenly combined, pour it into a small glass jar. Let it sit at room temperature until the cream hardens, close the jar’s lid, and store in a cool place. Apply morning and night after washing.Lotion bars:1 cup coconut oil1 cup shea butter or cocoa butter,4 cups beeswaxoptional: essential oils of choiceoptional: 1 teaspoon vitamin E oilInstructionsCombine all ingredients (except essential oils if using) in a double boiler or a glass bowl over a smaller saucepan with 1 inch of water in it. UPDATE: Low maintenance approach: Combine ingredients in a quart-size glass mason jar and place jar in a small saucepan of water until melted. This will save your bowl and you can just designate this jar for these type of projects and not even need to wash it out!Turn the burner on and bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients constantly until they are melted and smooth.Remove from heat, let cool a bit, and add any desired essential oils and/or vitamin E.Gently stir by hand until essential oils are incorporated.Carefully pour into molds or whatever you will be allowing the lotion bars to harden in (ideas below). I used silicone baking cups for easy removal, though any mold would work.Allow the lotion bars to cool completely before attempting to pop out of molds. Lip Balm:2 tablespoons beeswax pastilles2 tablespoons shea butter3-4 tablespoons coconut oil30+ drops peppermint essential oilInstructionsMelt beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler or small glass bowl over a small pot of boiling water, stirring constantly until melted.Remove pan from heat but keep over the still-hot water to keep the mixture melted.Add essential oils to your preference. I just added peppermint in this recipe. I recommend adding a few drops at a time and testing a tiny amount on your arm to make sure the scent is to your liking.Once you’ve added the essential oils, use the pipette or a dropper to fill the lip balm tubes. This must be done quickly since the mixture will start to harden as soon as it is removed from the heat.Let tubes sit at room temperature for several hours until cooled and completely hardened before capping them.Deodorant:6 TBSP coconut oil4 TBSP baking soda4 TBSP cornstarchRefrigerate for a few hours to set. Homemade bar soap:Ingredientscoconut oil ? cup – to produce good lather olive oil ? cup – which makes a hard and mild barother liquid oil ? cup – like almond oil, grapeseed, sunflower or safflower oil ? cup lye – also called 100% sodium hydroxide ? cup cool water – use distilled or purified InstructionsCover your work area with newspaper. Put your gloves and other protective wear on. Measure your water into the quart canning jar. Have a spoon ready. Measure your lye, making sure you have exactly ? cup. Slowly pour the lye into the water, stirring as you go. Stand back while you stir to avoid the fumes. When the water starts to clear, you can allow it to sit while you move to the next step.In the pint jar, add your three oils together. They should just make a pint. Heat in a microwave for about a minute, or place the jar of oils in a pan of water to heat. Check the temperature of your oils – it should be about 120° or so. Your lye should have come down by then to about 120°. Wait for both to cool somewhere between 95° and 105°. This is critical for soap making. Too low and it’ll come together quickly, but be coarse and crumbly. When both the lye and oils are at the right temperature, pour the oils into a mixing bowl. Slowly add the lye, stirring until it’s all mixed. Stir by hand for a full 5 minutes. It’s very important to get as much of the lye in contact with as much of the soap as possible. After about 5 minutes, you can keep stirring or you can use an immersion blender. The soap mixture will lighten in color and become thick. When it looks like vanilla pudding it’s at “trace” and you’re good to go. Add your herbs, essential oils or other additions at this point. Stir thoroughly to combine. Pour the mixture into mold(s) and cover with plastic wrap. Set in an old towel and wrap it up. This will keep the residual heat in and start the saponification process. Saponification is the process of the base ingredients becoming soap. After 24 hours, check your soap. If it’s still warm or soft, allow it to sit another 12-24 hours. When it’s cold and firm, turn it out onto a piece of parchment paper or baking rack. If using a loaf pan as your mold, cut into bars at this point. Allow soap to cure for 4 weeks or so. Be sure to turn it over once a week to expose all the sides to air (which is not necessary if using a baking rack). For a DIY soap drying rack, I took an old potato chip rack and slid cardboard fabric bolts (from a fabric store) through the rungs. When your soap is fully cured, wrap it in wax paper or keep it in an airtight container. Handmade soap creates its own glycerin, which is a humectant, pulling moisture from the air. It should be wrapped to keep it from attracting dust and debris with the moisture.Easy flatbread:This recipe makes ten 5-inch tortillas. If you need more, add more flour and water, and an additional quarter teaspoon of salt per cup of flour used. Each additional cup of flour will make 4-5 more tortillas.? 2 Cups of Flour – I use fresh-ground whole wheat flour for this batch. You can use a mixture of white and whole wheat, just plain white, or just plain whole wheat. Just don’t use a self-rising flour as no leavening agent is required.? ? tsp of Salt – I prefer using a moderately fine grind sea salt, but plain table salt will work fine.? ? – ? Cup of Water – I used just over a quarter cup as my wheat was fresh ground. If you are using pre-ground, or stored flour, it may need a bit more water. If you dump in the water in its entirety, you may need extra flour. I prefer adding the water a little bit at a time.Step 1Dump most of your flour into your mixing bowl. Keep a small amount aside to use when rolling out the dough. or grab extra flour when you reach that step.Step 2Add a small amount of water and stir. Then add a bit more and stir. Continue until your flour takes on a crumbly appearance, or starts to clump together. This was reached with ? cup of water for me. HYPERLINK "; Step 3Using your hands, knead the dough against the bottom of the bowl until it feels smooth and elastic (3-5 minutes). At this point, all the flour should be absorbed into the dough, and there should be no residual stickiness. If the dough feels sticky, add a bit more flour and continue kneading. HYPERLINK "; Step 4Cover your ball of dough and let it rest for 15-30 minutes. This permits the gluten to relax, which will make rolling out the dough easier and enable you to roll the dough quite thin.Step 5Start heating your cooking pan.Step 6Divide your dough into walnut sized lumps, or slightly smaller. With two cups of flour, you should get 8 – 10 dough pieces. HYPERLINK "; Step 7Spread flour on your rolling surface and press the first lump of dough into a flat circle. HYPERLINK "; Using your rolling pin, roll out the dough until it is as thin as you can make it. This is usually reached when the dough springs back when you try to make it thinner. The thinner it is, the quicker it will cook. HYPERLINK "; Step 8Check the temperature on your frying pan, it should be hot enough to make a drop of water dance when dropped on it. When your pan is up to temperature, flip your first tortilla onto it and start rolling the second one.I multi-task rolling and cooking. For the first one, you may want to just focus on cooking.Step 9After placing the chapatti on the frying pan, keep a close eye on it. When the edges start to curl up or appear dry, flip it. When the second side starts to bubble, flip it again. At this point, bubbles should start forming and the bread will “roil.”When it slows, flip it and more bubbles should appear. With the correct heat, the bubbles can all join into one massive “pita pocket” bubble. The more bubbles, the lighter your bread will be.Step 10When your cooking chapatti slows its bubble growth, and hopefully has a bit of nice browning on each side, flip it onto your tea-towel covered plate, and cover. Then roll and cook the rest of the batch.Variations: For a fun and more nutritious version, you can add freshly ground flax-seed, roughly a quarter cup per 2 cups of flour. When adding flax, or another seed, be aware that the seeds will break up the gluten network so that it doesn’t catch the air in the same way. When adding flax, you won’t get full pocket bubbles. Use different wheat flours, blends, or combinations for more fun.Hardtack:2 cups flour1/2 tablespoon salt (optional)1/2 to 3/4 cup waterPreheat oven to 250 degrees F. Combine flour with salt in a mixing bowl. Add water and mix with hands until the dough comes together. Roll out on a table to about 1/3 inch thickness. Use a knife to cut 3×3 squares from the dough. Place on baking sheet, and use a dowel (see note above) to make 16 evenly-spaced holes in each square. Bake for at least four hours, turning over once half-way through baking. Cool on a rack in a dry room.Ration bars:1 cup oats3 tbsp peanut butter powder1/4 tsp fiber powder1/4 tsp preservative 2 tbsp sugar1 tsp protein powder1/2-ish cup of waterBake at 200, for 20 minutes then flip and bake again at 200 for 20 minutes. It will harden up a little more once cooled.Dehydrated meal: CHEESY CHICKEN BROCCOLI & RICE1/2 cup dried rice1/4 cup dehydrated chicken 1/4 dehydrated vegetables (carrots, peas)2 Tbsp. dehydrated broccoli1 Tbsp. powdered milk 2 Tbsp. powdered cheese HYPERLINK "; 1/2 tsp. garlic powdersalt and pepper to taste1/2 tsp. corn starch or arrowroot powder1 1/4 cup water to rehydrateDIRECTIONS – AT HOMECombine powdered ingredients in a smaller separate plastic baggy, this is your sauce mix. This is the double boiler method and should always be used when working with oils and waxes. 3. Let it all melt on medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. 4. While it melts, you can add the essential oils to each container, or you can wait to add it to the container mixture after you’ve poured, it’s up to you. Either way, you’ll be mixing it all together within each container. 5. As far as containers go, I’ve used altoid tins and old baby food jars. Try to stick with tins and glass. 6. Once the mixture has melted, carefully pour it into each container. Mix the essential oils in and let it harden. Fixn’ Wax:Ingredients:2 tbsp mineral oil3 tbsp waxInstructions:Melt the mineral oil and wax in your double boiler method. 2. While that’s melting, cut up parchment paper and place it inside of your container/tins. I used altoid smalls containers. I don’t want the fix’n wax to be permanently inside of the container, so I’m using the parchment paper as a way to easily remove it once hardened and then placing inside of the container for later use. 3. Once melted, pour over the parchment paper into the containers. 4. Let set at room temperature or you can put into the fridge to set quicker. 5. Once set, remove from the parchment paper and place in the container. You can also wrap the wax in the parchment paper and then place in the container, either way works. ................
