Risks Associated with Methotrexate

Frequent (Between a 10-50% chance that this will happen)

• Pain in the head

• Feeling sick to the stomach

Occasional (Between a 1-10% chance that this will happen)

• Condition in which the number of white blood cells circulating in the blood is abnormally low. This increases the risk of infection, which may be serious or life threatening.

• Low number of platelets, which may cause bleeding and bruising. Bleeding may be serious or life threatening and may required a blood transfusion Low number of red blood cells that can causes tiredness and shortness of breath. May require a blood transfusion.

• Damage to the brain

• Confusion

• Pain

• Skin irritation, rash

• Dizziness

• Feeling tired, tiredness, weakness.

• Infection may occur anywhere in or on the body. Symptoms may include fever and/or pain. In some cases, infection may be serious or life-threatening.

• Inflammation of the brain, which may cause neurological damage including confusion, hallucinations, difficulty walking or using arms

• Vomiting

Rare (Less than a 1% chance that this will happen)

• Allergic reaction that may include a rash, hives, fever, difficulty breathing, and low blood pressure. Although usually reversible with treatment, it can be severe or life threatening.

• Bleeding into the space of the spine at the site of the injection

• Muscle weakness of the whole body

• Paralysis

• Convulsion or seizure
