Behind-the-wheel Training Lesson plan

Part One: adult Behind-the-wheel Training

Course Description and Methodology:

The behind-the-wheel training session for adult student drivers includes all essential trainings for actual driving skills that will be tested in the DMV behind-the wheel drive test. In the training session, the instructor shall focus on not only the students’ driving skill improvement, but also the students’ understanding of the corresponding traffic regulations of California, as well as instructing the students for necessary knowledge in case of emergency occasions on streets. Each training lesson takes 2 hours; the total length of the program and its schedule depends on the student drivers’ requirement. Highway driving lesson is optional and will be up to the student drivers’ actual progress during the training session.

Training Session Schedule:

(May be adjusted by instructors and students, according to the students’ different situations and actual progress.)

Lesson 1:

Basic knowledge of automobiles (paddles, buttons, meters on the dashboard, etc.)

Review the traffic rules/regulations that student have read from the California Drivers’ Handbook

Basic driving exercises including start/stop the car, left/right turn, curbside parking, etc. Each exercise should be repeated for at least 10 times in this lesson.

Lesson 2:

Driving exercises on busy and multiple lanes streets, in order to let the student accumulate driving experience and overcome the nervousness in the car flow

Left/right turns at the traffic light controlled intersections, and reemphasize the difference between protected and unprotected traffic lights; each exercise should be repeated for at least 10 times in this lesson

Lesson 3:

Lane change exercises. Instructor shall firstly draw graphs for student in order to clearly illustrate the correct and safe processes/actions for lane change in different situations, and then teach the student the correct way of utilizing the rearview mirrors. Finally, instructor shall conduct the student driver to do the actual lane change exercise on a multiple lane street for at least 10 times in this lesson.

Lesson 4:

Mainly focus on parking skill improvement, as well as some essential skills such as U-turn and three point turn.

Instructor shall take 30 to 45 minutes in this lesson to train the student driver for parking exercise in an appropriate parking lot. To let the student better understand the key points of parking and the difference between parking lot driving/parking and on-street driving, instructor may also draw graphs to illustrate, and constructively/inspiringly discuss with student after each time of the latter’s parking exercise.

U-turns and three point turns shall be practiced for 3 to 5 times, depending on the actual traffic situation during this lesson.

Lesson 5:

Driving exercises in downtown area and business area, in order to let the student driver further accumulate driving experience.

Instructor shall help the student driver to build the habit of paying high attention to pedestrians at busy intersections I downtown area, as well as paying attention to avoid blocking the intersection when the traffic is heavy in downtown.

Lesson 6:

Mountain road driving exercise (optional)

Instructor shall spend 20 minutes to let the student to “warm up” before driving uphill, and to help eliminating the student’s nervousness. Uphill driving exercise shall take 40 minutes and the downhill exercise shall take 30 minutes. Steering control and speed control shall be the main focus in this training.

Lesson 7:

Highway and expressway driving exercise (optional)

Instructor shall also spend 10 to 20 minutes to let the student to “warm up” before driving on the freeway, in order to reduce the student’s nervousness of first time highway driving. Before actually driving on the freeway, instructor has to draw graphs and carefully illustrate the correct way of merging into and exiting from the freeway. Entering/exiting the freeway shall be practiced for at least 8 times. Lane change exercise shall be done for at least 5 times. Changing into the carpool lane (if applicable) shall also be practiced.
