General Information

Individuals are required to be tested and licensed to drive a motorized vehicle. For information on applying and qualifying for a Hawaii Driver's License go to Requirements and Procedures. As of March 5, 2012, documents to prove legal presence is required for driver licenses and learner's permits. For more Real ID information, go to REAL ID-Compliant Hawaii Driver's License & State ID. Driver's licenses are valid for eight, four and two years from the date issued which corresponds to the license holder's birthday.

Eight years for license holders age 25 through 71. Two years for license holders age 72 and older. Four years for those under the age of 25, except for provisional licenses, which expire

on the individual's 19th birthday. An expired driver's license is not a valid license to legally drive. Active-duty military personnel and their dependents, whose driver's license expired while they were deployed out of the country, have the benefit of having their driver's license valid for 90 days after they return to the United States.
