The student who successfully completes the examination shall receive credit for that course.Credit for the course will be noted on his/her transcript and the course will count toward graduation requirements, both in total credits and required course enrollment. (Students will achieve Pass/Fail grades. Pass/Fail grades will not be figured into computing the student’s GPA.)A student with at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average may petition the principal for an opportunity to challenge a particular class under the following guidelines:A student must complete the “Application for Credit by Examination” and submit it to the counseling department within the first week of the semester. The student must take the test within the first two weeks of the semester.Satisfactory completion is defined as performance on the Credit by Examination test equivalent to a grade of 80% or better.A student may not attempt Credit by Examination for a sequential course below the level at which he/she has or is enrolled (i.e. a student may not attempt Credit by Examination for Algebra I if he/she is taking Algebra II).A student may not attempt Credit by Examination for a course that he/she has previously failed.A student may attempt Credit by Examination for a particular course no more than once.Credit by Examination will be given by semester credit only.Credit by Examination will not be available in:Physical Education classesGeneral electivesSpecial studiesField ExperienceSeminarsCredit by Examination will be attempted on comprehensive teacher prepared tests.General InformationThe Oakland School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, disability, marital status, sex or age in providing education or access to benefits of education services, activities and programs in accordance with Title VI, Title VII, Title IX and other civil rights or discrimination issues; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended; and the Americans with Disabilities Act.Anne Lamoreaux, Special Services Coordinator, has been designated to coordinate compliance with these legal requirements and may be contacted at the Oakland Elementary office for additional information and/or compliance issues.Access/Release of Educational RecordsBy law both parents whether married, separated or divorced may gain access to the educational records of their child unless the high school has evidence that there is a court order, state statute or legally binding document relating to such matters as divorce, separation or custody that specifically revokes these rights. Parents or legal guardians of a student, as well as any eligible student, may inspect educational records during regular school hours with a school representative present to properly interpret the record wherever needed.AccidentsStudents are requested to report any accident taking place at school to a teacher or to the high school office. Each student and his/her parents are responsible for health insurance to cover any health-related problems due to school accidents.Alternative Credit Oakland High school allows the earning of high school credit toward graduation by alternative educational services. Students may earn credits by taking pre-approved correspondence or online courses, attending summer school classes, earning credit by examination or taking classes in our local community college. Many of these services are costly and must be paid for by the student or his/her parents. A student interested in an alternative program needs to visit with a counselor to enroll and participate in one of these alternative services.Athletics and Activities EligibilityIn addition to OSAA eligibility requirements for athletics, students wanting to participate in sports, clubs, student leadership activities, etc., must meet the following expectations:Pass a sports physical. (athletes only) Students are responsible for the cost of this physical examination. Verify medical insurance coverage [sports only]Read and sign the Extracurricular Code of Conduct Agreement.Enroll in and be passing five (5) classes during the school day as well as be on track to graduate.Pay all pertinent Sports participation fees and student body fees.Maintain a “C” grade point average with no “F” grade during the season. If student falls below the standard, the student must participate in HELP class as indicated on page 12 of this handbook.Daily participation requires regular attendance at school. Please refer to Code of Conduct Agreement for attendance requirements. The purpose of extracurricular activities is to support the academic mission of the school district by providing students with social endeavors that help build self-discipline, teamwork and other character education qualities. In accordance with Oakland School District policy IGDJA, all students must meet and maintain eligibility standards for all district activities. Students represent themselves, their families, and their community at all times. During the time they are enrolled at Oakland High School, students are also representing their school throughout each calendar year and between freshman enrollment and senior graduation. Therefore, the Oakland School District expects positive behaviors from enrolled students at all times, whether engaged in an extracurricular activity or between extracurricular activity seasons. Extracurricular activity participation at Oakland High School is contingent upon positive student behaviors described in the “Code of Conduct”. Consequences for “Code of Conduct” infractions will be enforced either during participation in an extracurricular activity or upon engagement in a forthcoming extracurricular activity if the student is not participating at the time of his/ her behavior infraction. Any absence that is not excused as a Doctor or Dentist appointment accompanied by a note from the Doctor’s or Dentist’s office, a DMV appointment accompanied by a note, or a funeral will disallow the student from practicing or participating in a game the day the absence occurs.Attendance Procedures and ExpectationsAll students between the ages of 7 and 18, who have not completed grade 12, are required to attend school unless otherwise exempted by law. School staff will monitor and report violations of the state compulsory attendance law. Educational Research reveals that there is a positive relationship between consistent attendance in class and each student’s ability to acquire and process what is learned. To promote consistent attendance the following expectations apply: 20% of each quarter grade will be based on the student’s attendance and class participation. Absences (except those that are school related or are excused by a medical professional), tardies, and disruptive classroom behavior may lower a grade up to 20% in any class due to loss of participation points. Participation points can only be made up when absence is school related or is accompanied by a doctor’s note. Students who have an excused absence, but do not have a doctor’s note, are allowed to make up work for credit, but cannot make up participation points. Each student may accumulate only ten (10) absences excused or otherwise during each semester. Any amount over the ten (10) days may result in loss of all credit for any course effected. If a student should miss ten (10) days in any class, the attendance committee shall meet with the student and his/her parents to determine if credit will be denied or if the student should perhaps be put on an attendance contract covering the remainder of the semester. School related absences such as field trips etc. will not count toward this total.Absences will be monitored in the office. When a student accumulates five (5) absences a letter will be sent home letting parents know that five absences have occurred. When seven (7) absences have occurred a phone call will be made to parents alerting them further. Finally, if ten (10) absences are recorded a conference with the student and his/her parents and the attendance committee will be scheduled. At this meeting the committee will decide whether or not credit will be denied. Upon return to school from any non-school related absence a written excuse or a phone call from a parent or guardian is required. This is state law. All absences excused or otherwise (except those that are school related) are counted toward the total of ten (10) allowed each student each semester. However, should a student be called before the attendance committee the for missing ten or more days the committee will consider excused absences much more leniently than unexcused absences in determining whether credit will be denied. When absent, the parent or guardian needs to notify the school within 48 hours as to why their child was absent. This can be done with a signed note or a phone call from the parent or guardian to the office. Students who are absent are responsible for going to their teachers and collecting make-up work. If the absence is excused by the parent or guardian, students have 2 days following their absence to make up their work and get it turned in. OHS will provide students the work they missed from an unexcused absence, but students will not receive credit on that work. OHS will be making phone calls home each day that a student is absent and the school has not been notified. Backpacks, Purses, and HandbagsBackpacks, purses, and handbags are to be kept in student’s lockers. They are not allowed in classrooms or the library. Cellular TelephonesElectronic devices such as Cellular Telephones will not be used during class time, whether they are inside or outside of the classroom.
