The February Meeting

We held a bring and buy sale which turned out to be very successful and good fun. Thanks to those of you who generously donated the items which were auctioned. With all your help we raised over £150 including the sale of haberdashery articles donated by Pat Dorling. A special thank you to Colin Everett for his donation and I hope that he managed to get all of his purchases home safely! The funds raised will, of course, be used for the benefit of our membership.

The March Meeting

This will take place on Thursday 13th March from about 7.30pm at The British Legion, Western Road, Romford. We were hoping to have a pharmacist as our guest speaker but this is not possible so instead we will be holding a quiz. We haven’t had one for a long time so it will make a change. The winning team will be presented with a case of six bottles of wine even if there are more than six in the team. If there is a tie the team with fewer players will win otherwise there will be a tie-break. A bit of fun not to be taken seriously.

Donations

Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Terry Blake for stamps which are always welcome as postage is one of our largest outgoings and to Mr L Murr for sending us another cheque. He lives in Norfolk but likes to continue to receive our newsletters.

Cardiac Rehab Team

Congratulations to the rehab team at Queen’s Hospital who were nominated in the BHRUT Staff Pride Awards 2013 as Team of the Year in recognition of their outstanding contribution and service and with the thanks on behalf of the Trust Board. I am a regular visitor to cardiac rehab to speak to the patients as many of you are aware and the award is well deserved. For the avoidance of doubt I don’t take part in the exercises but I always enjoy the relaxation session. The only problem is waking up afterwards to address the patients!

Cardiac Respiratory Unit

My GP recently required me to have an ECG. I attended the unit at Queen’s Hospital, without an appointment, on a Monday at 11.10 am. I had four readings taken and I left the unit at 11.25. That’s what I call efficiency.

Do You Have a Pacemaker?

We have recently been contacted by Sue Morrison, Senior Research Recruiter for M3 Global Research who are conducting research for patients who have a pacemaker fitted with a home monitor which plugs into a phone and transmits information direct to a physician. This will involve the volunteer being filmed for about six hours over one typical day. Respondents will be paid £325 as a thank you. Mention us if you are chosen as there is also a referral fee of £50. Sue’s telephone number is 07932997432.

Heart Helpline

This may be a useful contact for anyone requiring information and support on anything heart-related. Phone lines are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday at similar cost to 01 or 02 numbers. The number is 0300 330 3311 or contact heartmatters@.uk

Five Surgeons

Five surgeons from big cities are discussing who makes the Best patients to operate on.

The first surgeon, from Toronto, says, 'I like to see accountants on my operating table because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.'

The second, from  Montreal, responds, 'Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded.'

The third surgeon, from Vancouver , says, 'No, I really think librarians are the best, everything inside them is in alphabetical order.'

The fourth surgeon, from Winnipeg chimes in: 'You know, I like construction workers...Those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over.'

But the fifth surgeon, from Australia shut them all up when he observed: 'You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on.

’There's no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains, and no spine..Plus, the head and the arse are interchangeable.'
