Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Service

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection for satisfactory penetrative sex. ED is extremely common and most men will experience it at some point in their lives. ED is not the same as premature ejaculation, which is when a man ejaculates within two minutes of penetration.

What causes ED?

A common cause of ED is a narrowing of the arteries that supply the penis with blood. It can also be caused by performance anxiety, stress or relationship difficulties. The following lifestyle factors can also contribute to the cause of ED:

? Being overweight

? Smoking

? Excessive alcohol consumption

How can this service help me?

At Asda Pharmacy you can seek advice on ways to address your ED.

1. If you are affected as a result of lifestyle factors, your Asda Pharmacist can discuss different services that you may find useful such as the range of weightloss products available in-store and our free Stop Smoking service.

2. It may be that medication you are currently taking is a contributing factor but dont worry, your Asda Pharmacist might be able to advise further.

3. Should the Pharmacist think it's appropriate, you can purchase an oral treatment to treat ED. These tablets can help relax the blood vessels in your penis, allowing improved blood to flow into your penis when you get sexually excited. The tablets do not act as an aphrodisiac.

Who can use the service?

You can use this service if you are male and aged 18 to 75.

You cannot use this service if: ? You have a history of low blood pressure. ? You have previously suffered serious

side effects to oral treatments for ED. ? You are taking medicines called nitrates

or the recreational drug `poppers'. ? You have angina, severe heart disease,

severe liver disease or kidney disease. ? You have had a heart attack or stroke. ? You have certain other medical conditions

or are taking certain other medicines (the Pharmacist will give you advice about which ones).

Should I inform my GP? It is important that your GP has an overview of any medicine you take. If you are supplied tablets as part of this service you can use this leaflet to advise your GP that you have used this service. Your GP can also provide any follow-up tests that the Pharmacist may recommend.

Don't forget, your Asda Pharmacy is open 7 days a week with late opening times available meaning you can get these at a time convenient to you.

How does the service work?

In the privacy of the Pharmacy consultation room, the Pharmacist will assess whether you could benefit from taking the tablets. If you try the tablets and find them to be effective, then you can purchase ongoing supplies from your Asda Pharmacy. The Asda ED service is a private medical service, meaning you will have to pay for the treatment yourself.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the service is dependent upon how many tablets you obtain. You can obtain up to sixteen tablets at a time. You can pay for the service at the Pharmacy by cash, debit or credit card.

Do the tablets guarantee a better erection?

The tablets help most men achieve a firmer erection however they are not guaranteed to work. If initially you find that the treatment is not effective then the Pharmacist may be able to supply you with a stronger dose.

How do I take the tablets?

Take one tablet about an hour before sex on an empty stomach. The manufacturer's leaflet that comes with the tablets will provide more details.

What are the side effects of the tablets?

Like all medicines, the tablets can cause side effects. The most common side effects are headache, indigestion, facial flushing, light headedness and a stuffy nose. Rarely the tablets cause blurry vision or blue haloes around bright lights. If you suffer any side effects that concern you, return to the Pharmacy or seek medical advice.

Can I take the tablets if I am taking nitrates or alpha-blockers?

You must not take the tablets if you are taking nitrate-based medicines or Nicorandil. Nitrates are present in some medicines to treat angina, such as GTN spray, and recreational drugs known as `poppers' or `room odorisers'. You must not take the tablets we provide within six hours of taking medicines called `alphablockers'. Examples of alpha blockers are Alfuzosin, Doxazosin, Tamsulosin or Terazosin.

Can counselling help?

Some men find counselling helpful. Your GP or local NHS sexual health clinic may be able to provide details of counselling services in your area.

Should I consider any follow-up tests?

It is extremely important that you consider having follow-up tests, even if the treatment works. ED is often a sign of potentially more serious underlying conditions like heart disease. So you should speak to your GP about being tested for possible underlying causes. Important tests to have are blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, as well as tests for various hormone levels.

For a full list of side effects please read the manufacturer's leaflet that comes with the medicine.
