Math!!!

Dear Students and Parents,

I am excited to be your math teacher for the new school year. I will be teaching the 8th grade math course, which will include the studies of pre-algebra.

I will do my best to teach the students the skills and the knowledge of the curriculum, and to instill in the students the love for math. Since the curriculum this year is very involved, I would need your support and at home, concerning reinforcing homework completion, and your encouragement to study and practice daily.

YOUR CONCERNS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME!

ATTENDANCE:

1. Students are expected to be on time to class.

2. Students, who were absent, are responsible for making up all missed work. Please speak to me after you return from an absence to find out what lessons you had missed, so I can help you catch up.

SUPPLIES REQUIRED EVERY DAY:

● A three-ring binder (this can be shared with another class) Please divide it into two sections. 1. Notes 2. Tests/Quizzes

● Loose-leaf paper to be kept in the “notes” section of your binder

● PENCILS!!!!! You must always come to class with pencils. All math will be done in pencil. (Good to have an extra eraser too!)

● A calculator. You need to bring the TI30XIIS with you every day. If necessary, the school can provide one to you, just print and fill out a copy of the calculator loan agreement form, or just ask for one!

● Highlighter at least TWO different colors

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:

1. Enter the classroom and sit in their seat on time.

2. Clear the aisle of all books and backpacks.

3. Take out their agendas and copy down the daily homework assignment/s.

4. Place their planner and the homework from the night before on the side of the desk, so I would check the homework.

5. Any student arriving late, with or without a pass, or leaving the room will sign the class “Sign-In-Out” book.

RESPECT FOR OTHERS:

1. Raise your hand to speak.

2. Do not use hurtful language.

3. One voice rule.

4. Listen and follow directions

5. Come prepared every day.

6. Observe all safety rules.

7. Respect all classroom materials

8. Do not get out of your seat without permission.

9. Pack up only when asked to do so by the teacher.

10. Wait for the teacher to dismiss you before you leave the classroom.

CONSEQUENCES for NOT FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS:

1st time – warning

2ndtime – detention with the teacher and phone call to parents

3rd time – Dean’s referral

GRADING POLICY:

Tests and quizzes – 60% of the grade

Homework – 20%

Effort and participation – 20%

When Mid-term or a final test is given, the grading policy may change.

Tests/Quizzes

During each unit, short quizzes will be given. Advanced notice will be given prior to the quiz and test dates. There will always be a period of review before each test. All tests and quizzes need to be signed by a parent and brought back in. The signed test/quiz will count as a homework assignment

EXTRA HELP:

Extra help will be on Tuesdays after school, in room D2-6. Students may clarify a lesson, make-up work, organize their notebooks, prepare for a tests or quizzes, and complete homework.
