MASTER OF EDUCATION

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master of Education in Career and Technical Education is available for students who possess a bachelor’s degree in business technology, family and consumer sciences, or technology education or a related field in any of those areas. Candidates may choose one of two options. Option 1 is designed for the candidate who has a bachelor’s degree in a related field in career and technical education and is interested in obtaining Arkansas teacher licensure. Option 2 is designed to meet the needs of current professionals in the field who desire to attain further education and an advanced degree in career and technical education. The Career and Technical Education program prepares students pursuing careers in career and technical education to advance their knowledge in career and technical education and/or to obtain licensure in business technology, technology, or family and consumer sciences education.

ADMISSION TO PROGRAM

For acceptance to the master’s degree program in career and technical education, the candidate must meet all general requirements of the Graduate School, a degree in an undergraduate program in career and technical education (business technology, family and consumer sciences education, technology education) or in a related field. Additional prerequisites prescribed by the program area are listed below.

Requirements for admission to the University of Arkansas Graduate School are as follows:

• A conferred baccalaureate degree. Students who have not completed their baccalaureate degree at the time of application must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA on the last 60 credit hours of attempted coursework. Students who have a degree at the time of application must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA on the last 60 credit hours of attempted coursework from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

• A standardized test score.

Requirements for admission to the Career and Technical Education program are as follows:

• Meet admission requirements for Graduate School.

• Passing score on GRE or Praxis Core:

o GRE: Reading (151), Writing (4), Math (153)

o Praxis Core: Reading (156), Writing (162), Math (150)

• Successful interview with CATE faculty

CURRICULUM

Candidates for the master’s degree in CATE must complete 9 credit hours of education core courses and 24 credit hours of professional education courses. In addition to the program requirements listed below, all degree candidates must successfully complete a written comprehensive examination the last semester of course work.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction is a post master’s degree that focuses upon the development of theoretical knowledge, research skills and the application of research in guiding investigations and improving practice. This degree provides advanced study and preparation for individuals who wish to pursue roles as higher education professors and/or researchers and/or serve in a leadership role in a variety of educational/clinical settings.

ADMISSION TO PROGRAM

Students are to first gain admission to the Graduate School and then into the program through departmental application. As part of the departmental application process, the applicant is to provide; three letters of recommendation, a brief narrative including an overview of previous experience and future goals, a professional writing sample, curriculum vita, and indicate the content interest area in which he or she will pursue.

For consideration for admission, applicants must have completed a master’s degree in a related field with a cumulative grade point of 3.5 or above on all prior graduate courses; have acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Examination completed with the last five years; and provide documentation of at least three year of field related experience.

Prerequisites to the Doctor of Philosophy Degree Program: Applicants for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must meet the following requirements in addition to the applicable requirements of the University prior to admission to the degree program:

1. Have a minimum grade-point average of 3.50 on all prior graduate courses.

2. Have a master’s degree with a minimum of 33 semester hours in a related area.

3. Present Graduate Record Examinations scores of approximately 149 on the quantitative section, 151 on the verbal section, and an appropriate score on the writing portion completed no more than five years prior to the date of application.

4. Have completed a minimum of three years full-time professional teaching experience or equivalent employment experiences prior to the application to the doctoral program.

5. Demonstrate career goals and research areas that can be satisfied by the skills and interests of members of the CIED faculty which include but are not limited to instructional technology, mathematics education, social studies education, science education, career and technical education, English education, language education, educational leadership, special education, TESOL, elementary education, gifted and talented education and related areas.

6. Submit the materials requested in the supplemental application (available on line or from the CIED graduate coordinator). These materials include a personal statement, writing sample and resume.  A personal interview and/or prior contact with a member of the Ph.D. faculty is highly recommended before applying.

Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree: After acceptance into the program, the candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy degree must meet the general University degree requirements, and complete a minimum of 102 semester hours of graduate study approved by the student's Doctoral Advisory Committee, including 60 semester hours taken on this campus.

The program of study for the Doctor of Philosophy candidate must include the following:

|II. |Procedures After Being Admitted | |

|1. |Select a Committee. Composition of the committee should be the major advisor and at least two other members of | |

| |the graduate faculty. The Doctoral Advisory Committee form is submitted to Graduate School immediately | |

| |following or at the time of admission to the program of study. | |

| | | |

| |This committee will serve in an advisory capacity in working out and directing a suitable program of advanced | |

| |study and investigation. The student’s major adviser shall serve as chair of the committee. Appointment of this | |

| |committee does not constitute admission to candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. | |

|2. |Develop a Program of Study. Prior to the completion of 12 semester hours, the student, in cooperation with the | |

| |major advisor and the advisory committee, should develop a specific Program of Study. | |

| | | |

| |A minimum of 50% of the first 30 credit hours and at least 42 of the final credit hours presented for the | |

| |doctoral degree must be at the 5000 level or above. | |

| | | |

| |Transfer of credit is not acceptable for doctoral degrees. | |

| | | |

| |The degree must be completed with seven consecutive calendar years from the first semester of admission to the | |

| |program. | |

|III. |Coursework and Residence Requirements | |

|1. |A minimum of 102 approved graduate hours beyond the baccalaureate degree is required for the doctoral program. | |

| |The hours and the degree program must be completed within seven consecutive calendar years. Doctor of Philosophy| |

| |students should refer to the current Graduate Catalog for residence requirements. | |

| | | |

| |Note: Enrollment in two consecutive semesters as a full-time student. | |

|2. |Complete Coursework. | |

| | | |

| |A minimum cumulative graduate grade-point average of 3.0 is required to earn a Doctor of Philosophy. Students | |

| |may not present for degree credit any course in which they earned a grade of D or F. | |

|3. |Annual Graduate Student Review form completed by the major advisor with consultation of the student. The major | |

| |advisor submits form to the Graduate School. | |

| | | |

| |Note: If a student receives two consecutive reviews indicating that the student is not making adequate academic| |

| |progress, the program and Graduate school have the option to dismiss the student. | |

|IV |Candidacy Examinations. | |

|1. |Complete Candidacy Exams. After completing approximately two years of graduate study, the | |

| |prospective candidate must take candidacy examinations in specified fields of study in | |

| |accordance with the requirements of the program in which the candidate is working. These | |

| |examinations may be either written or written and oral, but the expectation is that their | |

| |purpose is to determine if a student is prepared to move to the independent research stage of| |

| |his/her degree. Upon satisfactorily completing these examinations, the student may be | |

| |admitted to candidacy and may proceed to work toward completion of the remaining requirement | |

| |for the degree. The Graduate School should be notified within two weeks of the student being | |

| |admitted to candidacy. Note: The Graduate School considers the Advisory Committee to be | |

| |responsible for administering and evaluating the candidacy examinations, but degree programs | |

| |may vary. | |

|2. |Candidacy Examination Report. The result of the candidacy examination is the basis for | |

| |determining doctoral candidate status and any further assessments of courses or independent | |

| |study. Candidacy Examination Notification Form should be sent by the advisor within 30 days | |

| |upon completion of the exam. | |

|3. |Registration. All doctoral students who have been admitted to candidacy must enroll in a | |

| |minimum of one hour of graduate course work or dissertation credit every major semester | |

| |(fall, spring) until they graduate. Doctoral students must also be enrolled in a minimum of | |

| |one hour of graduate credit in the semester that they graduate. | |

|V |Dissertation | |

|1. |Research Proposal. Select a problem approved by your program advisor and prepare a written | |

| |research proposal. Present research proposal in writing to your dissertation committee for | |

| |their consideration and approval. “A Guide for Preparing a Thesis and Dissertation” is | |

| |available in the University Bookstore. | |

|2. | Submit Proposal to Human Subjects Research Review Committee. Students, in consultation | |

| |with advisor, should submit their research proposal to department’s Human Subjects Research | |

| |Review committee or, when appropriate, to the departmental Animal Research Review Committee. | |

| |The IRB Cover Sheet – Institutional Review Board form – should then be submitted by | |

| |departmental review committee to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. | |

|3. |File Dissertation Title. Immediately after the proposal has been approved by the | |

| |dissertation committee, the Doctoral Dissertation Title should be completed and sent directly| |

| |to the Dean of the Graduate School. | |

| | | |

| |This form is submitted to the Graduate School as soon as the dissertation topic has been | |

| |established. Title changes may be submitted by memorandum to the Graduate School until | |

| |immediately before graduation; however changes submitted less than four months before | |

| |graduation may not appear in the Commencement Program. | |

|4. |Dissertation Credit. A minimum of 18 semester hours of credits required for the doctoral | |

| |program. A candidate must be continuously enrolled until completion of dissertation (see | |

| |current Graduate Catalog for details). | |

|VI. |Program Completion | |

|1. |Announcement of Dissertation Defense. Announcement of a doctoral candidate’s defense must be| |

| |submitted to the Graduate School at least TWO weeks prior to the date of the defense. Please | |

| |include your full name, defense title, defense date, time, location and major adviser. | |

|2. |Final Oral Defense. The final oral examination is generally confined to the student’s | |

| |dissertation and is given only after each member of the committee has had at least two weeks | |

| |to study the completed manuscript. The candidate’s final examination for the degree of | |

| |Doctor of Philosophy will be oral. | |

| | | |

| |At least two weeks in advance, the major adviser will forward to the Dean of the Graduate | |

| |School notification about the date, time and place of the final oral examination. | |

| | | |

| |All members of the dissertation committee must participate in the final oral defense of the | |

| |dissertation unless the Dean of the graduate School has approved an exception. This | |

| |participation may be by distance. | |

| | | |

| |The examination is open to the public. Questions from the public are at the discretion of the| |

| |committee chair. | |

|3. |Degree Application. The degree application is available in the Student Center of UAConnect | |

| |and should be submitted for the semester in which the student expects to complete all | |

| |requirements for the degree. | |

| | | |

| |Fall graduation checklist – apply to graduate by October 1st. A Record of Progress must be | |

| |submitted to Graduate School and your Degree Audit must be completed by the department. | |

| | | |

| |Spring graduation checklist – apply to graduate by March 1st via your student center in | |

| |Send an electronic copy of your dissertation to the Graduate School (gradtad@uark.edu) for a | |

|4. |Submission of Preliminary Copies to each dissertation committee member at least six weeks | |

| |before final defense of dissertation. | |

|5. |Final Manuscript. Thesis/Dissertation Submission Form must be submitted to Graduate School. | |

| |The Intellectual Property Disclosure Form is required for all students and must be submitted | |

| |to the Graduate School with the final copy of the dissertation. | |

| |Begin the dissertation pre-check process with the Graduate School at least two weeks prior to| |

| |the dissertation submission deadline. | |
