Course Description

This course is designed for undergraduate students who seek an understanding of legal aspects of and ethical issues in health care in the United States. Topics to be examined include all of the following: corporate liability, fraud and abuse, compliance programs, medical staff issues, nursing and other health care professionals’ liability, legal reporting requirements, patients rights and responsibilities, criminal aspects of health care, malpractice insurance, tort reform and patient safety.

Knowledge Objective

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the legal and ethical environment of health care organizations.

Course Structure

The course will incorporate both lecture and discussions. Discussion among the group will enhance the student’s learning and is highly encouraged. The course relies on texts and case studies which play a vital role in comprehension of the subject. Therefore, in order for the student to fully participate they must complete assigned readings prior to each class.

| |Writing assignments will be graded based on 1) the depth of understanding exhibited in your writing, 2) the quality of the |

| |paper’s organization,(If in doubt use the Rulebook for Arguments for reference.), 3) spelling and grammar (3 points will be |

| |deducted for each grammatical and each spelling error. If in doubt go to the writing tutor center and/or edit each other’s |

| |papers.) All writing assignments must be 12 point font with 1 inch margins. |

| |Appropriate citations must be made. Papers will be checked for plagiarism with Turnitin software. If for example 20% of your|

| |paper is improperly cited you will only start with 80% of the points prior to grading. If 20% or more of your paper is |

| |improperly cited you will receive a zero on the paper and will be reported to the student integrity office. |

| |patient with a special focus on the effectiveness of the process to ensure autonomy for the patients. 400 words maximum. |

| |The final exam is optional. If you are satisfied with your grade you can choose not to take the final. The final cannot |

| |lower your grade. The final is cumulative. |

Attendance is required Your grade will drop if you miss more than 3 classes.

3 missed classes= no grad change, 4 missed classes = one grade drop, (for example A to A-) 7 missed classes = two grade drop. For example A to B+, etc.. There are no excused absences. Note that arriving late or leaving early is disruptive and is included in absences.

Grading Scale

There are approximately 400 points before the final. Every 4 points is approximately equal to 1%.
