Unit & Lesson: English 5, Unit 3, Lesson 2Objective: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to write sentences using the restrictive relative pronouns who, that, which and where, in groups.Materials: warm-up sentence scramble (one for each group), blank pieces of paper (one for each team), one set of trivia game questions (written or printed big enough for the whole class to see on the board), magnets/tapeWarm-Up (5-10 min)Divide Ss into groups. Give each group a warm-up sentence scramble. Tell the groups to match the papers to make sentences. Maybe do one example on the board. While Ss work, Ts should circulate and check Ss’ homework. When Ss finish the scramble, they should write the sentences in their notebooks. Check answers as a class; write the answers on the board.Presentation (10 min)The board should look like this:Mr. Smith is a doctor who works at the hospital. Harry Potter is a book which is very good.Erdenet is a city which is very clean.UB is a city where many people live.Ask Ss, “Where are the pronouns?” Underline them on the board:Mr. Smith is a doctor who works at the hospital. Harry Potter is a book which is very good.Erdenet is a city which is very clean.UB is a city where many people live.Ask Ss, “What about ‘that?’ Where can we use ‘that’?” Write it on the board:Mr. Smith is a doctor who/that works at the hospital. Harry Potter is a book which/that is very good.Erdenet is a city which/that is very clean.UB is a city where many people live.Ask Ss, “How can we split these sentences? Let’s make each sentence into two sentences. I’ll do the first one for you.” Write on the board:Mr. Smith is a doctor who/that works at the hospital. = Mr. Smith is a doctor. Mr Smith works at the hospital.Harry Potter is a book which/that is very good.Erdenet is a city which/that is very clean.UB is a city where many people live.Assign one sentence to each group. Give them two minutes to think and write. After the two minutes are up, ask Ss to share their answers. Write them on the board and discuss any mistakes. In the end, the board should look like this:Mr. Smith is a doctor who/that works at the hospital. = Mr. Smith is a doctor. Mr Smith works at the hospital.Harry Potter is a book which/that is very good. =Harry Potter is a book. Harry Potter is very good.Erdenet is a city which/that is very clean. =Erdenet is a city. Erdenet is very clean.UB is a city where many people live. =UB is a city. Many people live in UB.Underline the nouns that are used in the clauses:Mr. Many people live in UB.Ask Ss, “Which one is different?” Try to get Ss to notice that the first three sentences combine SUBJECTS, whereas the last sentence combines one SUBJECT and one OBJECT (of a preposition). Point out that this sentence uses ‘where,’ whereas the third sentence uses ‘which’ or ‘that.’You may also want to write the structure for the sentences: (noun) + (be) + (category) + (pronoun) + (description)Mr. Many people live in UB.You may need to translate some of the words! Category = ангилал, description = тайлбарMake sure Ss write everything down in their notebooks.Practice/Production (20 min)Give each group a piece of paper and choose one ‘writer’ per group. Write the categories and points on the board:SCHOOLANIMALSFOOD100100100200200200300300300400400400500500500Explain to Ss how to play the game: Team 1 will choose a category and a question. The T will put that question on the board, so everybody can see it. Team 1 then has 30 seconds to write down their answer. If they don’t finish in 30 seconds, or if their answer is wrong, Team 2 then has 30 seconds to answer. If they don’t finish in 30 seconds or if they answer incorrectly, Team 3 has a chance, and so on. To make sure Ss practice before they produce, tell the teams that they must choose only easy questions (100 or 200 points) for the first few rounds of the game. After about 10 minutes, tell them they can start choosing more difficult questions.HomeworkSs must write four sentences, using who, that, which and where. ................
