VETERINARY MEDICINE

In order to become a veterinarian, you must:

**take the appropriate pre-requisite coursework,

**take the appropriate entrance test (GRE),

**complete a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) (4 years),

**obtain a license to practice.

What should I major in?

While there is no prescribed major for admission into a veterinary medical school, it is imperative that students complete all required courses for admission. Vet schools vary significantly in their requirements, and it is important for you to learn what coursework the schools that interest you want. Students should choose their major according to their strengths, interests and alternative career choices.

Minimally, a student should complete these courses at Western for most vet schools:

• ENGL 101 and ENGL 202

• BIOL 140, BIOL 240 and BIOL 413/414

CHEM 139, CHEM 140, CHEM 241 and CHEM 242

PHYS 130 and PHYS 131

• MATH 153 and MATH 170

• BIOL/CHEM 361

• Humanities/Social Sciences

• One course in animal nutrition (available online through another institution)

Advanced coursework in Biology and Chemistry is highly recommended.
